What’s it take to become a secret spy?
We all love to watch spy movies where the main character is a super-suave secret agent who goes undercover to take down wild and wacky supervillains. But does all that happen in real life? Not quite! Things look a little different at organizations like the FBI or CIA, which are the places those spy movies are based on. Here are some things you should know before diving in:
Understand what the CIA or FBI does.
The movies make these organizations seem super cool and mysterious. They’re definitely mysterious, but they’re not exactly all about high-tech gadgets and cool missions. A lot of the work they do is just gathering information and doing small investigations. Think of them like the police, but a little higher up on the food chain. It’s not very glamorous, but it is secretive and interesting!
Be physically fit.
Most government jobs of this kind require you to be in good shape. After all, you might be chasing down suspects (or running from them)! Usually, they have you take a fitness exam where you have to complete certain cardio and strength exercises to prove that you’ve got the stuff. If you’re not a super physical person, though, you might be able to get a job doing something other than going on assignments or missions, like collecting information.
Have a clean background check.
Working in high levels of the government requires something called clearance, which means you’re cleared to access sensitive and secret information. Only people with spotless backgrounds, like people who haven’t committed any serious crimes, are able to get clearance, so be on your best behavior!
Are there other jobs that are like being a secret agent?
Yes, actually, lots! You don’t have to go into the CIA or FBI to feel like a secret agent. Believe it or not, journalists
are even more like secret agents. They get out, explore, interview interesting people, and piece together mysteries. Similarly, being a private investigator
means literally investigating mysteries. Or, if you want to do something less dangerous, you could become a historian or archeologist, who travels the world and studies the secrets of the past. There are loads of options!
