What are the major dere types?
Anime and manga are overflowing with romantic tropes and character types. These character types are called “deres,” which comes from the word “deredere,” meaning “lovestruck.” If you watch enough anime or read enough manga, you’ll start to recognize certain patterns in how characters act around their love interest, and this is what the dere categories are all about! There are loads of different kinds of dere, but here’s a breakdown of the major types:
TsundereTsunderes are the classic kind of dere. Literally, the word means “hot and cold.” Likewise, tsunderes tend to act both hostile and bashful around the person they love, swinging between the two moods like a pendulum.
Yandere“Yandere” means “lovesick.” Yanderes start out sweet and friendly, and act all lovey-dovey toward their crush. But if something starts getting between them and their love, or intruding on their territory, yanderes get uber defensive and obsessive.
DeredereDeredere is the purest kind of dere. They’re just happy, in love, and not afraid to show it! They’ll cozy up to their crush and overwhelm them with affection, and their positive, upbeat attitudes are totally infectious.
Dandere“Danmari” means bashful, and danderes are the shyest of the bunch. Sometimes, they’re so shy they can’t even speak, and other people think they’re emotionless. When they fall in love, though, they’ll peek out of their shells for a chance at romance.
Darudere“Daru” means dull, and daruderes like to give off a cool and boring exterior, like nothing really impresses them, not even their crush. They’ll still hang out with their love and follow them everywhere, but don’t even think about asking if they’re in love.
Kuudere“Kuu” means cool, and kuuderes are the definition of cool. Unlike other deres, kuuderes are actually mature and level-headed, even around their crush. They’ve got lots of life experience and nothing shatters their collected and composed exterior.
Bakadere“Baka” means idiot or dummy. Bakaderes are usually the comic relief, and are totally clueless when it comes to love. They’ll proudly say the wrong thing or be way too forward in their confessions, but they’ve got good hearts and great attitudes.
Himedere/Oujidere“Hime” and “ouji” mean princess and prince. These dere types think they’re nothing less than royalty, and deserve to be treated as such. They demand respect and adoration, but will sometimes get a little more humble if it means impressing their crush.
Hinedere“Hine” comes from the Japanese word for glum or pessimist. Hinederes have negative views about the world and about love, and don’t think it’s all that worth it. But when they meet the right person, their outlook starts to shift toward more positive feelings.
