How to Choose an Engagement Ring

Picking out an engagement ring is serious business, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Understanding what goes into choosing a ring and basic engagement ring terminology will help make the whole process simpler, less stressful, and more fun (as it should be!). Choosing an engagement ring generally involves:

1. Figuring out your ring size. The ideal ring slides on the finger easily, but has a little bit of resistance so it doesn’t fall off. You can determine your ring size using a ring sizing chart. Just measure your finger and match the measurement to the right ring size on the chart. You can find ring sizing charts online, or ask any jewelry store employee for assistance.

2. Choosing the ring setting style. The ring’s setting (including solitaire , bezel , halo , and others) refers to how the gemstone is mounted to the metal band of the ring. The setting, maybe even more so than the stone itself, is what really gives the ring its personality.

3. Choose your ring’s precious metal. The ring’s setting and band can be made of a number of different metal types and colors, from rose gold to white gold to platinum and beyond.

4. Pick your stone. The most classic engagement ring stone is, of course, the diamond, but you can always opt for something more unique, like a ruby, emerald, or sapphire. If you’re sticking with tradition, consider the Four C’s when selecting your diamond— cut (e.g., round, heart-shaped, oval), color , clarity , and carat weight . For some people, the stone’s cut is the most important aspect of the ring, while for others, the color matters more. Look at a variety of different stones to get a sense of what matters most to you.
