Ingrown hairs occur because the hair curves back in upon itself and then gets infected. To prevent ingrown hairs, try applying warm compresses to the area or taking a warm shower beforehand to help stimulate blood flow. Massaging the area in a circular motion with either soap or cleanser before you do your waxing or hair removal can help as well—it brings the hair out of the follicle, so it doesn't curve back on itself.

Make sure to choose a sharp, single-blade razor (not a dull, overused one) because the sharper the razor, the more cleanly it will lift the hair. Finally, shave in the direction of the hair growth, making sure your skin is wet and lubricated.
