If you have a carpenter ant infestation, you'll see large, black ants with large heads and mandibles. Additionally, seeing frass (sawdust and insect parts and dead ants) is a sure sign there is an infestation and a pest management professional should be consulted for the best course of action. Chronic wetness and leaks in a house or structure are very attractive to carpenter ants and their presence in wood is almost always associated with high humidity and high moisture.

This species of wood-destroying insect is very active at night but will be quite inactive in daylight hours. Like termites, ants have a queen, workers, and soldiers. Carpenter ants have dimorphic workers, meaning there are two types: the large (½-inch) soldiers, which will travel up to 100 yards from the colony, and smaller (¼-inch) workers which stay much closer to the main nest and aren't particularly distinctive from other house ants.

Carpenter ants are pretty big compared to other ants, so if you see bigger black ants in your home, it’s possible they’re carpenter ants. To be sure, look for bent or joined antennae, which are pretty distinct from other species—most ants have straight antennae. Also, some carpenter ants fly. If you notice that some of the ants you’re running into can flutter around with two pairs of wings while the other half just seem to crawl around, it’s a good sign you’ve got carpenter ants.
