How Do People Change Over Time?

A lot of people believe that personalities are fixed, destined to remain the same throughout our entire lives. In reality though, that’s not the full story at all. Some qualities get stronger as we get older, and some tend to fade with time. Psychologists use the Big Five Personality Test to measure a person’s personality. The Big Five Test describes:

Openness: A willingness to try new things and understand new perspectives.
Neuroticism: Feelings of distress, anxiety, and emotional instability.
Extraversion: Friendliness and feelings of joy associated with others.
Conscientiousness: Being regularly responsible, meticulous, and hard-working.
Agreeableness: A tendency to be polite, pleasing, and cooperative.

So how do these qualities change over time?

  • 12 and under: Some studies suggest that our measurable personalities are set as early as 1st grade. If you were talkative, adaptable, or impulsive as a kid, those qualities might predict certain traits that are likely to resurface in adulthood. For instance, some studies suggest that impulsive kids grow into curious adults with a wide range of interests (meaning, they’ll have a higher openness). The more you know!
  • 14-19: In our teenage years, we continue to rack up defining experiences and to establish traits that’ll influence who we become., One recent study found that when teens are able to act authentically and fully own their personal identity, they’re more likely to have emotional control down the line (AKA, lower neuroticism).
  • 20s: Neuroticism, for most people, peaks in their 20s—what a relief! Basically, this just means that if you struggle with anxiety, feelings of sadness, or emotional instability, science is on your side. There’s a good chance that those feelings will lessen over time, and you’ll feel happier as you continue to age.
  • 30s: Agreeableness starts to spike in your 30s. At this age, you start to get a better handle on how to manage conflict, how to make a great first impression, and how to keep the peace. Plus, what’s more: your agreeableness is likely to keep improving throughout your life.
