How To Pick Out a Perfume
Picking out a new fragrance can be exhilarating—but it can also be overwhelming, with so many options, and many of them rather pricey! So how do you pick out the perfect scent ?
- Start by considering your budget: how much can you afford to spend? Realize that more expensive perfumes are likely to last longer, so it may be worth it in the long run to get a pricier fragrance. That being said, if you can’t afford an expensive perfume (few of us can!), lots of smaller, more affordable fragrance houses make convincing dupes (that is, a fragrance designed to mimic a more expensive or famous fragrance—like Zara’s Cherry Smoothie is a dupe of Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry, or Ariana Grande’s Cloud is a dupe of Baccarat Rouge 540).
- Know the difference between “eau de parfum,” “eau de cologne,” and “eau de toilette”:
they each contain a different concentration of fragrance oil.
- Eau de cologne has the least amount of fragrance oil. Typical colognes have about 2-6% fragrance oil blended with other ingredients like alcohol or water. This means that the cologne is light and not too long-lasting.
- Eau de parfum is a rich, concentrated blend consisting of about 15-20% fragrance oil and 80-85% of another ingredient like water or alcohol.
- Eau de toilette is a mixture of 5-15% fragrance oil and 80-95% water or alcohol to create a refreshing spritz that lasts longer than cologne, but not as long as parfum.
- Figure out what scent profile you enjoy. If you enjoy a certain fragrance family—such as floral, woody, citrus, or spicy—consider looking for a perfume that falls into this family. (If you’re not sure what you prefer, you can always figure it out by trying out different perfumes in the store.)
- Consider when and where you plan to wear the perfume. Are you looking for your new signature scent that you can wear anywhere? Or do you just need something light and inoffensive to wear to the office? Maybe you need a perfume for a hot date or a wedding? Different perfumes are appropriate or effective in different situations. For instance, a good date night fragrance might lean a little more sensual and heavy and feature ingredients like vanilla, oud, or amber, while a good office perfume might be a bit lighter and feature more citrus, mint, gentle florals, or milk notes.
- Try not to smell too many perfumes at once.
You might feel like a kid in a candy store at your local Sephora, but try not to smell everything in one go or your nose will get more desensitized. Instead, pick out a few fragrances to test.
- Pro tip: If you feel like your nose is becoming less sensitive to the fragrances, take a break: most fragrance stores provide containers of coffee beans to smell when your senses start to become too overwhelmed. The bitter coffee scent can help kickstart your sense of smell, at least a bit.
