Fun Facts About the United States
As the third biggest country in the entire world, the United States of America has a whopping total of 50 states (not including its capital). Whether you hail from the USA or another country, here are a few fun facts you might not know about the US:
- There are 5 US territories.
US territories are places beyond the standard American borders that still qualify as American soil should you visit them. They include Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
- There are 3 freely associated states.
Freely associated states exist as their own separate nations, but they’ve signed a Compact of Free Association agreement with America. According to the US government, these states (through the previously mentioned Compact) “receive US economic assistance and grant the United States permission to operate military bases on their soil and make decisions that affect mutual security." The freely associated states include the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Micronesia. [1]
