All About the Four Seasons
- The Northern and Southern Hemispheres (divided by the equator) experience opposite seasons throughout the year. While people in North America are enjoying winter, for instance, people in Australia are experiencing summer weather.
- Astronomical seasons occur around the same time each year and are marked by solstices and equinoxes (instances where the Sun goes over the equator directly). The beginning of winter is marked by the winter solstice around December 22; the start of summer is marked by the summer solstice around June 21; the beginning of autumn is marked by the autumnal equinox around September 22; and the start of spring kicks off on the vernal equinox around March 21.
- Meteorological seasons assign 3 months to each season based on typical weather/temperature experienced during certain types of the year. Meteorological winter is December, January, and February; meteorological spring is March, April, and May; meteorological summer is June, July, and August; and meteorological fall is September, October, and November.
- In astrology, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces are the signs associated with winter. Similarly, Aries, Taurus, and Gemini are associated with spring; Cancer, Leo, and Virgo are associated with summer; and Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius are associated with autumn.
