Fun Facts about the Sonic Universe

  • Sonic the Hedgehog hails from the Sega video game universe. The first game to feature this iconic character was Sonic the Hedgehog , which came out in 1991 (on the Sega Genesis console).
  • In 1993, Sonic got the rare privilege of being the very first video game character to be featured as a balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  • The live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie was originally slated for release in November 2019, but the movie was workshopped and delayed after receiving widespread criticism about Sonic’s funky design.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog can’t swim, as Sega game developers originally believed that real hedgehogs couldn’t do so. (Hedgehogs can, in fact, swim well.)
  • Sonic and his friends got to share the screen with characters from the Mario universe in the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games franchise.
