The term “gallon” usually refers to the U.S. liquid gallon, which is a measurement of volume used widely in the United States and some other countries. In certain cases, you may want to convert to gallons from some other common unit of liquid volume measurement, such as pints, quarts, milliliters, or liters. Or, you might want to calculate the volume of a cylindrical or cube-shaped container and convert that result to gallons. In any case, grab your calculator!

Calculating the Volume of Various Containers

Determine the overall shape of the container. Before you figure out how many gallons a container can hold, you have to figure out the three-dimensional shape of the container. Different shapes—such as a cylinder and a cone—require the use of different volume formulas. [12] X Research source
- Common container shapes include rectangular prisms (which include cubes), cylinders, cones, pyramids, and spheres.
- If the container is made up of multiple regular shapes—for instance, a pyramid on top of a cube—treat each part as a separate container. Determine the volume of each component separately, then add the amounts together to get the total volume.

Estimate or calculate the volume of an irregularly-shaped container. Some containers—for instance, an oddly-shaped swimming pool—just don’t fit neatly into a regular shape pattern. In many instances, your easiest option is to estimate the volume based on the regular shape the container most closely approximates. For example, if the pool is nearly a rectangular prism, you might just treat it as a rectangular prism.
- The easiest way to precisely determine the volume of an irregularly-shaped object is by placing it in a graduated cylinder and measuring the change in the water level inside the cylinder. This isn’t practical if you’re trying to figure out the volume of a large container like a swimming pool, though!

Choose the volume formula to use based on the container’s shape. Each regular shape has a unique volume formula, so make sure you pick the right one! For example: [13] X Research source
- Rectangular prism: L * W * H (L = length, W = width, H = height)
- Regular pyramid (with a square base): (1/3) * (L * W) * H
- Cylinder: π * R 2 * H (π [pi] = approximately 3.14; R = radius [half of the diameter]; H = height)
- Cone: (1/3) * π * R 2 * H
- Sphere: (4/3) * π * R 3

- Regular pyramid (in meters): (1/3) * 1.92 [L] * 2.3 [W] * 2.1 [H] = 3.09 cubic meters

- Convert from cubic feet to gallons by multiplying by 7.48: 8.4 * 7.48 = 62.8 gallons
- Convert from cubic meters to gallons by multiplying by 264.17: 22.45 * 264.17 = 5930.62 gallons
