  1. A soft, lightweight yarn is best for baby booties, such as a #1 super fine or #2 fine yarn. [1] You can find these yarn ratings on the yarn wrapper.
    • Most craft stores carry special types of yarn for knitting baby projects such as blankets and booties.
    • Select the yarn type and color that will fit your vision for the booties and that will make the booties feel nice and soft as well.
  2. You will need a size G-6 (4 mm) hook to make these booties. The hook size is usually on the hook handle, but you can also get a hook sizer to check your hook size if you are unsure.

  3. Gauge refers to the number of stitches that is required to make a certain type of yarn reach a specific measurement. The gauge also relies on the needle size. Gauge is important to make sure that the garment you create will be the right size. [2]
    • The combination of yarn and hook should yield a half double chain of 15 stitches that is about four inches (10 centimeters) long. If your gauge is off, adjust as needed with a lighter or heavier yarn or by changing the size of your hook.

  • Question
How do I do a single crochet stitch?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
Easy. Insert your hook into the first chain or stitch and pull up a loop. You will have two loops on your hook. Grab the yarn and pull a loop through the two loops on you hook. You've just made a single crochet. Also see single crochet .
  • Question
Would the number of stitches be different if I'm making it for a 2-year-old?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
It's hard to know this. You start with 12 chain stitches for the sole and go around doing the increases until you reach the size you need. The best you can do is guesstimate how big it needs to be. Most of the instructions out there are for newborns, though there are some for slippers for older children.
  • Question
How do I crochet the sole for the right bootie? Tutorials just show one foot.
    Michele
    Top Answerer
In most bootie tutorials, including the one here, there is no left or right foot. The sole of the bootie is the same: thinner at the heel, and a little wider at the toes.
