    Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr means “Festival of the Breaking the Fast.” According to Mohsin, Eid al-Fitr is the first day of the lunar month of Shawwal after observing Ramadan, a month of fasting and prayer. The fasting during Ramadan allows Muslims to become closer to Allah and focus on their faith. Eid marks the end of fasting and gives believers the opportunity to thank Allah for the strength they had throughout Ramadan. [7]
    • The beginning of Eid comes with the new moon but can vary based on where in the world people are celebrating.
    • Religious authorities may set the beginning of Eid in their area on different days. [8]
    • Mohsin says that Eid al-Fitr can happen at any time of the Gregorian year because it’s based on the Islamic lunar calendar. The date changes from year to year.
    • Some Muslim countries have official government holidays that last 3 days or more for Eid. [9]

    Eid al-Adha marks the climax of the Hajj or pilgrimage. Eid al-Adha means “Feast of the Sacrifice.” It’s a holiday that Muslims celebrate after the Hajj , or a pilgrimage to Mecca. This celebration commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail. [10] Eid al-Adha usually happens on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul Hijjah and falls about 10 weeks after Eid al-Fitr, but it can vary. [11]

  1. Because Eid al-Fitr comes at the end of a fast, feasting and eating sweets are common ways to celebrate. It’s often referred to as the “Sweet Holiday” because people eat sweet foods like dates, halwa, falooda, cookies with milk, and baklava.
