    I have written a book with pen-and-ink illustrations. Do I set up the illustrations myself in the context of where they are to occur, or just include as a page in correct order with the text?

    Basically, you can do what you like. If the illustration is less wide than the text on the page, you can outline text around the image, or give it its own paragraph. If it's large enough, I always like for an illustration to have its own page entirely, and I prefer to see the image after I've read about it, even three pages later. Or, if you have one image per chapter, start a new page for each chapter and give the title and the image so I can turn the page, start reading and remember the image when I come to it in the text.

      • Keep reading a lot, especially within your chosen genre. This will improve your writing by giving you a better eye for what works and what doesn't.
      • If you're submitting to a contest through a literary magazine, familiarize yourself with that magazine's aesthetics.
