If you’re running out of storage space on your Mac computer, you should target the largest files for deletion to get back the most space. Luckily, it’s easy to find the big documents taking up space on your drive. Things You Should Know

  • On macOS Ventura and later, go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage .
  • On macOS Monterey and earlier, go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage .
  • Or, in Finder, use the + button to add a file size filter using the Other option.

  4. This is an option on the right. You’ll see categories of files on your Mac. Their total storage space usage will be listed next to the info button.
  5. This will open a list of your Mac’s document files.
  6. This tab will show you the largest files on your Mac.
    • You can sort by size by clicking the Size header above the list of documents.

Using the Finder Filter

  1. In a Finder window, enter a keyword in the top right search bar. This method allows you to filter files by size and type. [3]
    • If you don’t have a specific search term, you can just start typing — the filter bar will appear automatically. Then, delete whatever you typed.
  2. This is located below the search box.
  3. This is located in the pop-up menu to the left, below the search bar.
  4. Choose this option in the box next to “Kind is”.
  5. Choose this option in the pop-up window. You can use the attribute search bar to find it quickly.
  6. This will search for files bigger than a certain size.
  7. A good starting size is 100 to 200 MB. You’ll see large files, like videos and slide decks.
  8. After completing the filters, you’ll see the results below in the Finder window right away.
  9. To do so:
    • Right-click the document to open its options menu.
    • Click Move to Trash .
