A step-by-step guide to obtaining Charmander on an emulator or console
PDF download Download Article

Charmander is one of three starters you can choose from at the beginning of Pokémon Red, Blue, LeafGreen, and FireRed. In Pokémon Emerald, however, it’s only possible to get Charmander by either physically trading or by using a cheat code in a Game Boy Advance (GBA) emulator. We’ll walk you through both methods, so you can add this fun fire Pokémon to your roster (and, eventually, Charmeleon and Charizard).

How do you get Charmander in Pokémon Emerald?

You can get Charmander in Pokémon Emerald by entering cheat code 28302DAD BF3BEFBA into a GBA emulator. Alternatively, you can get Charmander without cheats by using the GBA Game Link Cable and trading with a friend who has FireRed or LeafGreen on their GBA.

Trading from LeafGreen/FireRed

  1. The player who has LeafGreen or FireRed needs to have unlocked the National Pokédex. They also need to have collected the Ruby and Sapphire from Mt. Ember to power up the Network Machine on the Sevii Islands. You (the player with Pokémon Emerald) also need to have the National Pokédex unlocked before you can trade with a FireRed or LeafGreen game. [4]
    • In Pokémon Emerald, Professor Birch automatically upgrades your Pokédex after you beat the Pokémon League. [5] In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Professor Oak will upgrade your Pokédex after you’ve conquered the Pokémon League and you’ve encountered at least 60 Pokémon at that point. [6]
  2. In both Emerald and LeafGreen/FireRed, visit the person at the center counter. The game will confirm that you want to trade Pokémon and save your game. Then, both in-game screens will read “Please wait.” [7]
  3. Trade using the Game Link Cable . Plug one end of the Game Link Cable into the corresponding port on the back of each GBA console, making sure that each connection is secure. When both ends of the cable are plugged in, follow the on-screen instructions to complete your Charmander trade. [8]
    • Alternative: You can use the GBA Wireless Adapter to trade if both you and your friend have it—just make sure it’s plugged in before you boot up your games. The second floor of the Pokémon Center will automatically be configured to the Wireless Adapter when the accessory is plugged in.
