Avocados are pretty magical by themselves. Their beautiful, tasty fruit is adapted to attract giant sloths, but the tree has somehow survived the sloths skipping their lunch dates for the last 13,000 years. [1] X Research source But getting these magical fruit to show up takes some extra magic that only humans have invented: grafting two plants together to make one. Grafting is never 100% guaranteed, but it gets easier with practice and you can easily try it at home with basic supplies.

Tips
- It's best to attach the scion the same day you cut it. But you can cut off branches in advance and store them in a cool place (about 40 °F (4 °C)) in polyethylene bags, to use when the rootstock is ready (no more than 2 or 3 months at most). This isn't super reliable and it's best for large grafts, so it's not that useful for most home gardeners. [22] X Research sourceThanks
- You can also make a "T-bud" cut upside-down and stick the bud in from below. This is a good option if you're expecting a ton of rain, so water can't get into the cut. [23] X Research sourceThanks
