The Harry Potter series is home to one of the most dynamic, beloved, and imaginative sets of characters ever put into fiction. But if you know and love every Potterverse character’s personality already, have you ever thought about what their psychology-backed MBTI personality type might be? The MBTI (or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) categorizes people into 16 different personality types based on whether they’re more Extraverted or Introverted (E/I), Sensing or Judging (S/N), Thinking or Feeling (T/F), and Judging or Perceiving (J/P). With these metrics in mind, we invite you to discover the core personalities of every Hogwarts witch and wizard (as well as which character you share an MBTI type with).

MBTI Personality Types of Harry Potter ’s Main Characters

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Harry Potter – ISFP At the center of the Potterverse, we find, of course, “The Boy Who Lived.” Harry Potter himself is usually characterized as an ISFP, also known as the “Adventurer” or “Composer” personality. Fitting with his MBTI type, Harry is primarily motivated by his values, convictions, and a fierce devotion to his friends and loved ones. He’s willing to put his own life on the line—sometimes acting impulsively—if he believes that he’s doing what’s right or what’s in the interest of the greater good. As a Feeling-Perceiver, Harry keeps most of his (quite complex) emotions held far beneath the surface, but he displays them through his actions rather than his words. [1]
    • Others describe Harry as an ISTP , also known as the “Virtuoso” or “Craftsperson.”
  2. 2
Ron Weasley – ENFP As Harry Potter’s lovably goofy and loyal best friend (as well as being a skillful wizard in his own right), Ron Weasley is often categorized as an ENFP or “Campaigner.” Just like any ENFP, Ron is a steadfast companion to all whom he loves, a capable leader when the need arises, and an impulsive and adaptable individual who’s quick to speak his mind and spark new ideas in others. Ron is also the most extroverted of the core trio, balancing out the highly logical Hermione and often-serious Harry with some humor and energy.
    • Ron is alternatively characterized as an ESFP , which is the “Entertainer” personality type. [2]

  3. 3
Hermione Granger – INTP The one-and-only Hermione Granger is known for her intelligence, logic, and courage—after all, she’s been repeatedly described as the “brightest witch of her age.” Accordingly, Hermione fits neatly into the INTP personality type, also known as the “Logician” or “Thinker.” INTPs are characterized as being insatiably curious, firm in their convictions, and perfectly happy with a few great friends rather than several good ones—all traits that can easily be applied to Hermione.
    • Some argue that Hermione is more of an ESTJ or “Supervisor” personality type.
  4. 4
Draco Malfoy – ESFJ The young Slytherin is primarily motivated by a few not-so-healthy factors: reputation, social status, and the approval of his friends and family. Despite some moments of emotional conflict in the series, Draco’s villainous side almost always wins out—largely due to pressures from his parents and a desire for self-preservation, both of which outweigh his sense of what’s right and wrong. Despite his faults, Draco demonstrates loyalty to the Malfoy family, Lord Voldemort, and Slytherin House, as well as a highly social personality and natural leadership skills (just like the “Consul” or “Caregiver” ESFJ personality type). [3]
    • In other sources, Draco is often described as an ENTJ, or “Commander” type.
  5. 5
Neville Longbottom – ISFJ The timid yet courageous Neville is a great example of the “Defender” or “Protector” personality type—aka an ISFJ. Neville’s soft and sweet personality is outwardly dominated by nervousness and trepidation. However, despite the fears he so obviously feels, he's willing to face them to protect his friends and fight for what is right. Like a true ISFJ, Neville’s introverted enough to shy away from the spotlight, but he actually has some truly heroic moments throughout the series—including being the one to kill Nagini (the final Horcrux) right in front of Voldemort. [4]
  6. 6
Fred and George Weasley – ENTP While technically two people, the identical Weasley twins are depicted as having very similar personalities and storylines throughout the series. Fred and George are loud, chaotic, mischievous, creative, and hilarious—making them a natural fit for the ENTP or “Visionary” personality type. From top-notch pranks to successful business ventures, the Weasley twins consistently demonstrate their vision, curiosity, and innovation while still maintaining their fun-loving and rule-bending personas. [5]
    • Other sources categorize Fred and George as ESFPs , also known as the “Entertainer” or “Performer” personality type.
  7. 7
Luna Lovegood – INFP The sweet, quirky, and wise-beyond-her-years Luna Lovegood is a classic example of an INFP (also known as the “Idealist” personality type). INFPs are quiet, idealistic, empathetic, creative, and imaginative. These traits are pretty much exemplified by this Ravenclaw witch, from her belief in and care for zany creatures to her knack for observing what others don’t. However, despite her reserved and inward nature, Luna is a strong and passionate fighter when she needs to be, another characteristic of the passionate and value-driven INFP. [6]
    • Some claim that Luna is an INTP , or a “Logician” personality type.
  8. 8
Ginny Weasley – ESTP The youngest Weasley is a tried and true ESTP—a personality type that’s nicknamed as the “Dynamo.” Ginny is an extremely passionate, driven, and confident witch who can adapt to most situations with ease. Her quick wit and independent spirit allow her to carve out her own path alongside her brothers and motivate Harry to do what he must in the final books. Ginny is also a fearless risk-taker, a key trait of ESTPs, as demonstrated by her joining the battle in the Department of Mysteries, fighting as an underage witch in the Battle of Hogwarts, and co-leading the reformed Dumbledore’s Army as a form of resistance under the Death Eater administration. [7]
  9. 9
Albus Dumbledore – ENFJ Professor Dumbledore is Hogwarts’ most iconic headmaster, a truly powerful wizard, and one of the most enigmatic (and contradictory) characters in the Wizarding World. Dumbledore is at times mysterious and reserved, but at other times he’s zany and sociable. He’s intuitive to the feelings of others, popular amongst students and adults, and skilled in the ability to command any room he walks into. [8]
    • The headmaster’s ENFJ (“Protagonist”) personality is further characterized by an extremely human and emotional perspective on life, which he demonstrates in his constant efforts to do the right thing and create a safe and accepting world for all—regardless of the sacrifices that may be required.
  10. 10
Minerva McGonagall – ENTJ The firm yet fair head of Gryffindor House is one of the most beloved professors at Hogwarts (and for good reason). Professor McGonagall has an unwavering authority and a commanding presence that make her a shoo-in for the “Commander” personality type (also known as ENTJ). McGonagall is unprejudiced, rational, and disciplined in her adherence to right and wrong, but she doesn’t let arbitrary rules get in the way of what is truly good and fair. [9]
    • McGonagall may also be described as an ESTJ , or “Supervisor” personality type.
  11. 11
Severus Snape – INTJ Snape is one of the most complex characters in the Harry Potter world, and fans don’t even know his true motivations until the very end of the original series. On one hand, Snape is often portrayed as a villain, due to his historic grudge against Harry and his one-time allegiance to Lord Voldemort. However, we learn at the end of the series that Snape was loyally protecting his loved ones (specifically, Lily Potter) throughout the entire plot. It then becomes clear that the Potions professor possesses classic INTJ (Architect) traits, including a strategic approach to life, an aloof outward demeanor, and a strong sense of determination. [10]
    • Other fans argue that Snape is more of an ISTJ , which is the “Logistician” personality type.
  12. 12
Rubeus Hagrid – ISFP The ever-lovable Hagrid is a pretty clear-cut ISFP, which is also known as the “Adventurer” or “Composer” archetype. These personality types are often described as introverted, empathetic, hands-on, and devoted. Hagrid, likewise, is an extremely sensitive soul who cares for every creature on earth—even the ones (like spiders and dragons) that others reject. He’s an extremely good judge of character and is very loyal to the people (and animals) that he cares for, including Harry and Dumbledore. As a groundskeeper for Hogwarts, Hagrid is skilled with hands-on, practical activities, but he prefers to use his talents away from any attention or spotlight. [11]
  13. 13
Alastor Moody – ENTP This fearless and extremely powerful auror arguably achieved all he did due to his willingness to break the mold and challenge society’s norms. As a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Moody frequently bent the rules if he thought the result would contribute to the greater good (e.g., teaching the Unforgivable Curses to students in order to prepare them for Voldemort’s return). Just like the ENTP or “Debater” personality, Moody is an independent thinker and constant contrarian who is always searching for the next best idea (regardless of whether that idea might be considered improper or insensitive). [12]
  14. 14
Dolores Umbridge – ESTJ There are few characters as universally hated as Dolores Umbridge (honestly, even Lord Voldemort might have more sympathizers!). In her brief stint as a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, this ESTJ personality laid down a strict rule of law and order—a characteristic typical of her “Executive” MBTI type. Umbridge adheres to law, tradition, and rule above all else, but she also uses those guidelines to control and abuse others—including her Hogwarts students. [13]
  15. 15
Remus Lupin – INFJ Deeply intuitive and introspective, Lupin is a classic example of an INFJ (or “Advocate”). He’s extremely emotionally intelligent, a trait that matchmaker Lauren Sanders describes as “huge” for INFJ personality types. [14] Lupin has an innate understanding of Harry’s inner turmoil, and his quiet teachings and clear sense of empathy provide comfort to Harry and his Hogwarts classmates. As one of the four Marauders—and in some ways the most introverted one—Lupin is a steadfast friend and brave leader, although he leads with quiet strength and gentleness more than he does with aggression or showiness.
  16. 16
Sirius Black – ESTP Godfather of Harry and best friend of James, Sirius Black is perhaps the boldest and most daring of the four Marauders. Particularly after his stint in Azkaban, Sirius fears nothing and is willing to risk almost anything to achieve his goals. His action-oriented and energetic behavior aligns perfectly with an ESTP or “Dynamo” personality type. He’s wily, quick-thinking, and relies on his instincts to come up with creative solutions and protect his loved ones.
  17. 17
Lily Potter – ENFJ While her character doesn’t appear that many times throughout the books or films, Lily Potter is arguably one of Harry Potter ’s most influential characters, being the mother of the titular protagonist. Throughout her appearances in the series and the stories shared about her by living characters, Lily is portrayed as brave, passionate, and exuberant. She’s extremely loyal and willing to sacrifice her own life for those she loves—namely, her son, Harry—and she’s also able to empathize with people who are seen as outcasts or eccentric by others (i.e., Snape). [15]
    • Fittingly, Lily is typically assigned the ENFJ or “Giver” personality type, which describes charismatic individuals who care about effecting change and are skilled at connecting with others.
    • Some Potter fans, however, believe that Lily is an ESFJ , which is the “Caregiver” or “Consul” personality type.
  18. 18
James Potter – ESTP While the adolescent version of James is portrayed as an arrogant bully, he clearly grew out of these traits to become a fiercely courageous wizard and a loyal and loving family man. Exemplifying his ESTP (“Entrepreneur,” “Dynamo”) personality type, James was clearly a natural leader with a knack for wit, observation, and adaptability. While he was more of a prankster than an academic (similar to his son, Harry), he took on immense amounts of responsibility when it came to the important things in life—like fighting back against Voldemort’s tyrannous rule.
  19. 19
Dobby – INFP Everyone’s favorite free elf is usually classified as an INFP, or a “Mediator” (or “Idealist”). Dobby is set apart from the rest of his house-elf species by a strong sense of morality and independence. He longs for freedom, gains no enjoyment from a life of service, and helps others at all costs—even sacrificing his own life in the end to protect Harry. He also disobeys his one-time masters, the Malfoys, to warn Harry against returning from Hogwarts in the second book and film—a move that could’ve ended with grave consequences for the elf.
    • Dobby is sometimes characterized as an INFJ , which is the “Advocate” personality type. Sanders describes this personality type as “mission-based,” saying that INFJs “love to help others so much so that they may forget to help themselves,” which is a clear part of Dobby’s character arc. [16]
  20. 20
Lord Voldemort – ENTJ It’s not shocking that Voldemort falls into a personality type known as the “Commander,” but the legendary villain unsurprisingly exemplifies the unhealthy side of the ENTJ archetype. Voldemort’s sociopathic and ruthless behavior is driven by an insatiable need to be the most powerful, the most infamous, the most feared, and the most unkillable—and he’d stop at absolutely nothing to achieve those goals. Voldemort was also extremely cunning and strategic, demonstrating classic ENTJ traits of tactical and logic-driven leadership. [17]
    • Others describe Lord Voldemort as an INTJ , or “Architect.”

Gryffindor – INFP, ISFJ, ESFJ, ENTJ Gryffindor’s primary traits include bravery, leadership, and courage. However, their strong sense of right and wrong and love for a noble cause can sometimes lead them into reckless or impulsive behavior, which fits with their traditional MBTI types: INFP (“Idealist”), ISFJ (“Protector”), ESFJ (“Caregiver”), and ENTJ (“Commander”). [20]
    • What MBTI personality does the Slytherin founder have? Salazar Slytherin has an ENTJ (“Commander”) personality type.

Unsurprisingly, the altruistic Hufflepuffs tend to overlap with some of the most unproblematic and generally-beloved Myers-Briggs types, including ENTP (“Visionary”), INFJ (“Counselor”), ENFP (“Campaigner”), and ISFP (“Composer”). [22]
    • What MBTI personality does the Hufflepuff founder have? Helga Hufflepuff has an ESFJ (“Caregiver”) personality type.
    • What about Hufflepuff’s house ghost? The Fat Friar has an ISFJ (“Defender”) personality type.
