Follow these tutorials to turn your shoelaces into a cool design
Real sneakerheads know that the way you lace your shoes is just as important as which shoes you choose to wear. With their simplistic look, the popular Adidas Campus 00s are the perfect canvas for a creative (or classic) lace pattern that expresses your unique sense of style. Pick a design below and follow the steps to re-tie your shoe’s original laces—or add new ones in a different color or thickness.
Lacing Adidas Campus 00s Sneakers
- Thread your lace through the lowest holes on each side, outside-in.
- Weave the right-side lace through the first free hole on the left side, outside-in.
- Weave the lower left-side lace through the first free hole on the right side.
- Continue weaving back and forth, loosening the lace as you go.
- Tuck the top two lace lines under the tongue of the shoe or tie a bow.
Steps
Section 1 of 10:
Loose Lacing
-
Point the shoe so the toe is facing you. You’ll be working from the bottom (nearest the toe) up to the top of the tongue. These directions refer to your right and left when facing the shoe with the toe nearest you.
-
Lace across the two lowest holes. Insert the shoelace tips from the outside in. Hold the ends together and pull them through so you have an equal amount of lace to work with on each side. [1] X Research sourceAdvertisement
-
Thread the right-side lace through the next free hole on the left. Take the lace on your right and cross it over to the left side, weaving it through the next free hole on the left side (just above the hole that’s already been laced). Push it through from the outside of the shoe toward the tongue. [2] X Research source
- After pulling it all the way through the hole, tug at the woven laces to make sure they’re loose. Do this as you go—it’s easier than loosening your laces at the end.
-
Weave the bottom left-side lace through the next hole on the right. You’re essentially mirroring what you just did with the right-side lace. Bring the left-side lace over to the right side and weave it through the next free hole, threading from the outside in. [3] X Research source
-
Keep weaving the laces through the opposite-side holes. Always thread them from the outside in, so that the lace ends up dragging out away from the shoe. Loosen the woven bars of laces over the tongue as you go. Stop when you get to the top hole on both sides. [4] X Research source
-
Lace through the top holes from the inside out. Cross the right-side lace to the left top hole and the left-side lace to the right top hole. Before pulling the laces completely through the holes, tuck the last two lace bars you’ve made under the tongue. Pull through to finish lacing. [5] X Research source

Section 2 of 10:
Diamond Lacing
-
Position your shoe so the toe is pointing toward you. Sit on the floor or set your shoe on a newspaper on a table to bring it closer to eye level. These steps refer to your right and left when the shoe is pointed toward you.
-
Lace straight across the shoe’s lowest holes. Thread the ends of the lace through the holes from the inside (over the tongue) outward. Pull the ends through at the same time to get even lengths on each side. [6] X Research source
-
Thread the right-side lace on the left, skipping a hole. To start, grab the lace on your right. Pull it over to the left side and skip one hole above the one you already laced through. Thread it from the outside in and pull it all the way through. [7] X Research source
-
Thread the lower left-side lace on the right side, skipping a hole. Pick up the bottom left-side lace. Weave it outside in through the third hole from the bottom on the right side, leaving an empty hole between it and the bottom hole that you laced through first. [8] X Research source
-
Weave each lace through the hole you skipped on its side. First, grab the lace on your right side. Tuck it under the lace bar you just made and pull it through the empty hole just beneath it from the inside out. Do the same with the lace on your left side, tucking it under the lace bar and threading it through the empty hole you skipped on the left side. [9] X Research source
-
Continue this lacing pattern up the top of the shoe. Repeat the previous steps, crossing each lace from its side to the other side and threading outside in while skipping a hole. Then, thread the laces back through the empty holes from the inside out. Do this until you reach the top and have threaded through all the holes. [10] X Research source
-
Tie a bow. To lock in your design and secure the excess lace strands, make a bow over the tongue of the shoe. [11] X Research source

Section 3 of 10:
Bar Lacing
-
Point your shoe so the toe is facing you. Because you’re lacing from the bottom of the shoe up, it’ll be easiest to work with the toe toward you. The steps below talk about your right and your left when you’re facing the toe of the shoe.
-
Lace straight across the lowest holes. Thread your lace through the bottom right and left holes on your shoe (closest to the toe) from the outside in. Once each end has been threaded, hold them together and pull them through to get even lace lengths on each side. [12] X Research source
-
Weave the right-side lace through the third hole from the bottom. Grab the end of the lace on the right side. Staying on the right side, skip a hole and thread it through the third hole from the bottom. Insert the lace from the inside out. This will help you hide the space between the lace bars. [13] X Research source
-
Thread the same lace straight across. Pull the same right-side lace to the left side. Weave it from the outside in through the third hole from the bottom on the left side. The bar you create should be straight across, with an empty hole between it and the lowest hole. [14] X Research source
-
Weave the lower left lace through the empty hole. Pick up the lace on the left side that’s threaded through the bottom hole. Weave it through the empty second hole from the bottom on the left side, from the inside out. [15] X Research source
-
Thread the same lace straight across. Grab the lace out the second hole on the left and pull it to the right side. Weave it outside in through the empty second hole on the right side of the shoe. Now you have three lace bars.
-
Repeat the steps to create additional bars. Remember to skip a hole when lacing from the inside out on the same side. Lace from the outside in when crossing over to the parallel hole on the opposite side. [16] X Research source
- When threading the last two holes at the top of the shoe, tuck the last two bars under the tongue of the shoe. [17] X Research source

Section 4 of 10:
Top-Down Lacing (No Tie)
-
Face the unlaced shoe with the toe pointing toward you. These directions reference your right and left when facing the toe of the shoe. While you can use any lace for top-down lacing your Campus 00s, this technique works best with thin laces.
-
Fold the tongue forward and thread straight across the second-from-top holes. Fold the tongue forward and down toward you, bending it over itself. Lace straight across through the holes that are second from the top. Thread from the inside-out.
- Leave the very top holes on both sides unthreaded—you’ll pull the excess lace through them at the very end.
-
Pull the lace through and unfold the tongue. Once the lace is pulled through each hole evenly, unfold the tongue. Push it back in its normal position so it covers the lace. [18] X Research source
-
Criss-cross lace down the shoe. First, pick up the left-side lace. Cross it to the right side and thread it through the first free hole (third from the top), from the outside in. [19] X Research source Repeat with right-side lace. Cross it over to the left side and thread it through the first free hole, from the outside in. [20] X Research source
- Repeat until you’ve woven through the bottom holes, closest to the toe.
-
Weave the laces back up the shoe and through the top holes. First, grab the lace on the left side. Weave it up the shoe along the tongue, under the woven criss-crosses. Thread it through the top hole from the inside out. Repeat on the right side with the right lace. [21] X Research source
- There should be very little excess lace, but if there is, tuck the ends of the laces down into the sides of your shoe.

Section 5 of 10:
No-Show Lacing
-
Point your unlaced shoe so the toe is closest to you. When doing this lacing method, the left and right refer to your left and right when you’re facing the bottom of the shoe. [22] X Research source
-
Lace straight across the lowest holes. Run the lace ends through the bottom holes on the right and left side, closest to the toe. Thread the lace from the outside-in. Pull the lace through so the amount of lace on each side is even. [23] X Research source
-
Weave the left-side lace up the shoe. To start, pick up the lace on the left side. Weave it from the inside out through the hole just above it on the left side. Then, weave it from the outside in through the hole above that. Continue weaving inside out and then outside in until you thread through the final hole at the top of the shoe. [24] X Research source
-
Repeat with the lace from the right side. Weave it up the side of the shoe, starting by threading it inside out through the hole that’s second from the bottom on the right. Next, weave outside in. Never cross over the tongue. Keep going until you’ve threaded through the top hole. [25] X Research source
-
Tie a bow with the excess lace. Make the bow loose so you can tuck it under the tongue to hide the laces. Your no-show laces are complete. [26] X Research source
- Avoid running or doing too much walking with this lacing pattern. It’s loose, which could make it easier to trip or lose your shoe.

Section 6 of 10:
Bar and Criss-Cross Lacing
-
Point the toe of your shoe toward you. Set it on the floor in front of you. When following the steps, the right and left refer to your right and left when facing the toe of the shoe.
-
Fold your lace in half. Grab the ends and touch them together. The bottom of the skinny U-shape that forms when you hold the ends together is the midpoint of the lace.
-
Thread the lace through the two lowest holes on the right side. Thread them from the inside out—starting over the tongue and pulling the lace through and away from the shoe. Pull the lace ends all the way through. You need two even strands to work with. [27] X Research source
-
Lace both laces through the two lowest holes on the left side. First, grab the ends of the laces and hold them parallel to one another—you don’t want them to be crossed over each other. Pull them over to the left side of the shoe. Weave them through the two lowest holes on the left side from the outside in. [28] X Research source
- When you pull the laces through, pull them so they’re under the bars you just created, not over them.
-
Weave both laces through the next two holes on the right side. Thread them from the inside out. Again, don’t cross them over each other. Lace the higher lace through the higher hole and the lower lace through the lower one every time. [29] X Research source
-
Repeat these steps, stopping when one hole is left per side. Keep weaving both lace strands from right to left to right again, never crossing them and weaving through two holes at a time. Always thread from the inside out on the right and from the outside in on the left side. [30] X Research source
- When you reach the top holes, your laces should be coming out on the left side.
-
Separate the lace ends and thread them through the top holes. Take the higher lace and thread it inside-out through the top hole on the left. Take the lower lace and cross it over, threading it inside-out through the top hole on the right. [31] X Research source
- Tuck the single top lace bar under the tongue of your shoe for a cleaner look.

Section 7 of 10:
Star Lacing
-
1Set the shoe with the toe closest to you. You should be facing the toe of your Campus 00s. When the steps mention the right and left, they refer to your right and left while you’re facing the shoe.
-
2Thread most of the lace through the highest right-side hole. Thread it inside out, pulling it until only about 4.70 inches (11.9 cm) of lace is on the side of the hole by the tongue. The rest of the lace will be on the side of the hole leading away from the shoe. [32] X Research source
-
3Weave the long end of the lace through the highest left-side hole. Bring the long end of the lace over to the left side. Thread it from the outside in through the highest hole on the left side. [33] X Research source
-
4Thread through the third hole down on the left side. Again, work with the long end of the lace. Stay on the left side. Skip a hole and weave it through the third hole from the top, from the inside-out. [34] X Research source
-
5Lace straight across. Create another bar by weaving the lace straight across and through the third hole from the top on the right side. Thread it from the outside in. [35] X Research source
-
6Run the lace down the right side of the shoe. Because you just threaded it from the outside in, you can tuck it under the side of the shoe next to the tongue.
-
7Thread through the lowest right-side hole. Thread it from the inside-out through the lowest hole on the right side (closest to the toe). Pull it all the way through. [36] X Research source
-
8Weave through the left-side third hole from the top. First, cross the lace over to the left side of the shoe. Weave it through the third hole from the top—it will already have a lace woven through it from earlier. Thread it from the outside in. [37] X Research source
-
9Thread through the lowest left-side hole. Run the lace down the left side of the shoe along the tongue, as you did earlier on the other side. Thread it from the inside out through the lowest hole on the left side. [38] X Research source
-
10Weave through the right-side third hole from the top. Cross the lace over to the right side of the shoe. Thread it from the outside-in through the third hole from the top on the right side. There will already be a lace in the hole from earlier. [39] X Research source
-
11Thread again through the lowest right-side hole. Run the lace back down the right side of the shoe. Thread it from the inside out through the lowest hole on the right, like you did earlier. [40] X Research source
-
12Weave the lace over and under the bars you’ve made. Pull the lace back up the shoe and weave it. Thread it under the diagonal line that goes from left to right, then over the first bar, then under the highest bar. Pull it through and position it so it’s around the center of the highest bar. [41] X Research source
-
13Weave the lace downward, going over and under the bars. Start by folding the lace over the top bar, then under the lower bar, then over the diagonal bar that runs from left to right.
-
14Thread through the lowest left-side hole. Thread from the outside in. There will already be a lace in the hole from earlier. [42] X Research source
-
15Hide the excess under the left side. Weave your excess lace back up the left side of the shoe, going under every lace bar. Tuck it to the side so it’s not visible. Hide both strands of excess lace at the top of the shoe by tucking them beneath the tongue. [43] X Research source

Section 8 of 10:
Ladder Lacing
-
1Point the toe of the shoe toward you. Face the toe with your body—don’t sit behind the heel. When you do your lacing pattern, the right and left sides mentioned refer to your right and left. [44] X Research source
-
2Lace straight across the lowest holes. Thread the ends of your lace from the inside out through the bottom hole on each side. Pull the ends through together to get even lengths on each side. [45] X Research source
-
3Thread the lace ends through the next holes up, leaving loops. Thread the right lace outside in through the next hole (second from the bottom) on the right side. Thread the left lace outside in through the next hole on the left side. Instead of pulling them all the way through, leave a small loop, about 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) in length. [46] X Research source
-
4Weave each lace end through the opposite loop. Pull the left lace to the right side of the shoe and weave it through the loop there. Repeat with the right lace, weaving that one through the left loop. Finally, pull the ends of the lace tight, closing the loops and forming the first two rails of the ladder. [47] X Research source
-
5Repeat the pattern all the way up the shoe. First, thread each lace outside-in through the next hole above it on its side. Once again, leave small loops by not pulling all the way through. Cross the laces over and through the loops on the opposite sides, then pull tight. [48] X Research source
- If you’d prefer not to lace through the top holes, stop just before them and tie your excess lace into a bow. Tuck the bow under the tongue of the shoe for a cleaner look.

Section 9 of 10:
Loop-Back Lacing
-
1Point the toe of your Campus 00s toward you. When following the steps to do loop-back lacing, the right and left refer to your right and left while facing the toe of the shoe. [49] X Research source
- This design looks best with thin laces.
-
2Lace straight across the lowest holes. Run your lace through the lowest holes on the right and left side from the inside out. Pull the ends through slowly, making sure there’s an even length of lace coming out of each side. [50] X Research source
-
3Pull the laces across the shoe and make an “X.” Holding the ends of both laces, pull each one diagonally across the shoe. Cross them over one another so they make an “X.” [51] X Research source
-
4Wrap the laces around each other once, then re-thread. After wrapping the laces once at the center of the shoe (over the tongue), return them to the next free hole on their respective side. Thread them from the outside in. [52] X Research source
-
5Repeat these steps until you reach the very top holes. Continue to cross the laces over one another, wrap once in the middle, and thread from the outside in through the next available hole. Stop at the top holes. [53] X Research source
-
6Thread each lace through the top hole on its side. Instead of crossing over and then doubling back, lace the ends of the laces through the top holes on their own sides. Pull them through and let the lace ends dangle. If there’s a lot of excess lace, tie a bow. [54] X Research source

Section 10 of 10:
Spider Web Lacing
-
1Face your shoe so the toe is towards you. During this tutorial, the terms “right” and “left” refer to your right and left when facing the toe of the shoe. [55] X Research source
- This lacing method works best with thin laces.
-
2Thread straight across the second-to-last holes. Weave the ends of your lace through the second-to-last holes from the bottom on the right and left sides. Thread them from the inside out. The lowest hole on each side should be empty. [56] X Research source
-
3Thread both lace ends through the lowest holes on their sides. Take the right lace and thread it through the lowest hole on the right side from the outside in. Do the same with the left lace, threading it outside in through the lowest hole on the left side. [57] X Research source
-
4Thread the laces across to the next free hole on the opposite side. First, thread the left-side lace up through the next available hole on the right side, from the inside out. Repeat with the right-side lace, crossing it over to the next available hole on the left side and threading it inside out. [58] X Research source
-
5Run the left-side lace through the tight loop below it. String the left-side lace down the left side and through the loop you made earlier when you threaded through the lower two holes. Pull the lace through from the outside in. [59] X Research source
-
6Repeat with the right-side lace. Run it down and through the loop that’s strung across the lowest two holes on the right side. Pull it through the loop from the outside in. [60] X Research source
-
7Repeat the pattern all the way up the shoe. Take the laces from each side and cross them to the first available hole on the opposite side, threading inside out. Then, pull them down through the loops below them on their side before crossing again. Keep threading until you reach the top holes. [61] X Research source
- Tuck the excess lace below the tongue or down into the sides of the shoe, by your ankle.
