About 300 million people in Bangladesh and India speak Bengali, or Bangla as the language is known to natives. There are many resources available to help you learn Bengali on your own for free. Since the language has a syllabic alphabet, learning the alphabet can help you sound out new words that you don't know. If you want to learn how to read and write Bengali in addition to simply speaking the language, use these resources to master the alphabet and provide an introduction to Bengali grammar. Start with a Foreign Service Institute (FSI) short course. The FSI was created by the US State Department to teach embassy employees how to speak the local language.
