Pearl paints add depth to the base color, and bend the light to throw off a soft glow or even shift colors under certain angles. Aftermarket paint shops and OEMs both use pearl paints for added luster to auto finishes. Pearls are neither paint themselves nor actual pearls; they are semi-transparent, iridescent powders added to paint. “Ghost” pearls have little or no actual pigment in them and intensify the color they’re used with. “Candy” pearls have some pigment to them and highlight or complement the colors they’re paired with to give off that soft pearlescent glow. Bring out the best in your auto’s look once you understand how to pearl paint.

    • Use masking tape and paper to cover any areas of the car you do not want any paint on. If possible, include door jambs and trunk and hood lids, to avoid overspray getting into the interior, engine bay, or trunk.
  4. Apply masking paper to the walls and ceiling, and lay plastic on the floor for easier cleanup from the overspray once the painting is finished.

    • If possible, arm yourself with separate guns for the different stages, to save time cleaning between stages and to avoid cross-contamination of colors and types of paint.
    • If possible, use full-spectrum lighting to ensure the light will show accurate color.

Candy Pearls

  1. [10]
    • Because candy colors are translucent, like looking through hard candy, you will need to apply at least four coats. The color darkens as you layer it.. Pearl powder in candy paints intensifies or complement the color, depending on what color pearl you use. The color coat underneath will show through, with this candy color tinting it, and the pearl giving off an extra deep glow.
    • Overlap each pass by 75%.
    • Some professionals also elect to spray a clear coat between the base color and the candy color as added sealant.

  • Question
When mixing paint, is it 50/50 with the thinner?
    Community Answer
Only if you're using solvent base coat. California is using waterborne paint and you have to check temperature and humidity. And what kind of paint are you using -- solid or metallic, 20% solids 30% metallics? If it is low humidity, then add 10% more water.
  • Question
Why would pearl need to be added to a clear coat?
    Community Answer
Pearl paint is not added to a clear coat. If you choose to use pearl paint, you spray a clear coat on top of it, as you would with any paint, to protect the color.
  • Question
    Is there a black pearl?
    Community Answer
No, you spray a pearl clear coat over a black base. There's not much more to add.
