How to Pray When You’re Anxious

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Greet the Lord. The first step to starting your prayer is to address God. You might start formally with “Dear Lord” or “Almighty God,” or perhaps you begin with a more nonchalant opening like “Hi God.” Think of it like beginning a letter or conversation with a loved one. [17]
    • You can pray out loud or in your head. No matter what, God will hear you.
  2. 2
Tell God what’s troubling you. Now it’s time to open up. Remember, God is your friend—He loves and cares about you. Tell Him everything that’s on your mind. What do you need help with? How can He guide you? [18]
    • For example, you could say, “I’m really worried about passing my science exam. I want to get into a good college. I know I can do it, and I know you’ll guide me down the path that’s best for me, but I can’t help but be fearful. Please help me find peace and ease my worries.”
  3. 3
Thank the Lord for His blessings. Before you close your prayer, think of at least one thing you can thank God for. There’s always something to be thankful for, even when you’re anxious or going through a hard time. This shows the Lord that you appreciate Him. [19]
    • For instance, you might say, “Thank you for giving me the strength to ask you for guidance,” or “I’m grateful for all the opportunities you send my way.”

Nothing you thank the Lord for is too small. Thank God for whatever you’re grateful for—the air you breathe, the beauty of flowers, the food you eat, etc. Show how much you appreciate the world you live in.

  4. 4
Close the prayer with “Amen.” Say goodbye to the Lord by saying “amen” once you’ve finished your prayer. This closes your conversation with God. Think of it like saying “See you later!” to a friend. [20]

What does God say about anxiety?

PDF download Download Article
  1. God says anxiety can be overcome with faith. Anxiety appears many times in the Bible, with notable figures like Jacob and Esther experiencing anxiety. God does not deny anxious thoughts, but He does say that faith in Him is the one and only cure. To feel more at peace, the Bible recommends putting God first, acknowledging your sins, and having faith. You can count on the Lord to provide everything you need—He will guide you. [21]
    • As Matthew 6:33 states, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” [22]
    • Use Philippians 4:6-7 as your guide: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” [23]
    • Remember Psalm 68:20: “Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.” [24]
