  • Question
Does the blanket come untied or apart when you wash it?
    Community Answer
The blanket won't come apart if you make sure to double knot the ties tightly.
  • Question
How can I learn to tie a square knot?
    Community Answer
It's the same knot you tie before making the loop on your shoelace. First, label one end of the string A and the other B. Tie that knot (note whether A went in front of or behind B), and then tie it again, this time reversing A and B.
  • Question
    Are there alternative knots?
    Community Answer
If you are on Pinterest, look up fleece blanket edging. There are all sorts of ways depicted in images there. Some look like braids, others add crochet. Go with the one you like the most.
  • Question
Can I use single thickness instead of double?
    Community Answer
Of course! Cut the strips 1/2 inch wide and tie 2 strips together, rather than top and bottom (make sure you have an even number of strips on each side). Another method is to cut the strips and make a slip knot at the top of each, then pull the knots tight.
  • Question
Why do I need to roll the blanket?
    Community Answer
To even it back out after you've been pulling on it. You can try to pin the sides for the same effect.
  • Question
Do I use a simple granny knot or a double?
    Community Answer
A double knot is the tightest and will work the best, but a granny knot would be good enough. If you wanted to prefer one over the other though, go for the double knot.
  • Question
What is the purpose of cutting the corners out of a fleece tie blanket?
    Community Answer
It's not completely necessary. However, at least round out the corners so that you have a nice curve on your blanket.
  • Question
Does it matter what size square to use in corners?
    Community Answer
No, but consider cutting squares that are 4 by 4 inches. This way, the cuts will be 4 inches, no matter which side you are working on.
  • Question
I have a patterned fleece and would like to use it on both sides instead of another solid. Will this work?
    Community Answer
Yes; you will just have to work with two sheets of patterned fleece. Keep in mind, however, that a solid would accent it nicely, and that a pattern on both sides might look too busy.
  • Question
I don't want to lose any length. Do I have to cut off the selvage end of the fleece?
    Community Answer
You do not have to, but cutting off the selvage will help the ties look even and neater.
  • Question
How much material do I need? And do I cut out all four corners?
    Community Answer
You can make it as big or small as you want. The width of fleece is usually 60". We used a yard and a half on each layer. Yes, you cut out all four corners.
  • Question
What amount of fabric would I need for a queen bed throw?
    Community Answer
Measure your queen bed or as much of it as you want to cover, that will give you the length to buy. The width is predetermined by the width of the fabric. Most fleece is about 60 inches (five feet) wide. You could sew two pieces together I suppose, but it wouldn't look as nice unless you had a very busy print to hide the seam. Also, when buying, add a few inches to compensate for the ties taking up some of the length and width.
  • Question
Do I need to know how to sew to make this blanket?
    Community Answer
Not at all! This blanket does not require any sewing whatsoever. All you have to be able to do is measure, cut, and tie strips into knots.
  • Question
    How do I wash it?
    Community Answer
You can machine wash and dry it. There may be a bit of pilling, but not much. You could line dry it if you are worried.
  • Question
Do I need to stretch out the blanket after it is finished?
    Community Answer
Yes, stretching the blanket out will help it return to a rectangular shape. If left unstretched, the blanket will seem smaller and bunched up.
  • Question
Can I cover a crib bumper pad to match the decor using trimmed ties?
    Community Answer
Crib bumpers are dangerous. An infant can roll up against the bumper and suffocate. Do not use them.
  • Question
How can I tell the right side of fleece, is fleece always folded on the bolt with the right side out?
    Paige Komar Cunningham
    Community Answer
Yes, the right side (the side that faces out and everyone sees,) is usually much brighter and is generally fuzzier and softer.
  • Question
Why do I need to cut out material on the corners?
    Community Answer
The knots that you tie are going to end up being the border of the blanket, so the blanket is actually going to end up smaller than what you start with. If this is hard to imagine, think of it in reverse -- picture the size of the finished blanket and then think about where you would need extra fabric around the outside in order to have knots all around that rectangle. You'll see that you don't need any fabric in the corners.
  • Question
Can I add cotton in the middle to make it heavier or is it best just being fleece to fleece?
    Community Answer
Your cotton fabric is just going to float around in between the pieces of fleece. You don't need anything in there to make it heavier.
  • Question
What size fleece do I need for a full size bed?
    Gail Coleman
    Community Answer
I looked up bed quilt sizes and a full is 85" x 108". That said, with quilts you often make them so there are a few inches that drop over the sides of the bed. So I would think with a fleece blanket, you could choose whether or not to include a drop. If you decided not to, then you would need less material.
  • Question
How much it will cost for one blanket?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
It depends upon the price and size of the fabric at the time you purchase it. Currently, fleece runs from $5.99 to $10.99 a yard.
  • Question
Should the fabric be washed first?
    Community Answer
    There is no need to.
  • Question
Can I do this, if I buy a fleece blanket?
    Community Answer
No. If you buy it, it is already made.
  • Question
Would this be safe for a baby?
    Community Answer
We used these as floor blankets for our grandchildren and they worked perfectly. I don’t know that I would use one in a crib once they start putting things in their mouth, however.
  • Question
Can I sew the bottom of the cut strips around the blanket?
    Community Answer
I have sewn the top edge of a blanket that I made. I dislike the fringes hitting me in the face, so I went for a smoother top edge. I turned the blanket inside out prior to sewing for a nice clean hem. Next, I just sewed a 1 inch hem up to 5 inches on each side to keep the room for the fringes on each side of the blanket. The 5 inches is obtained from a 5-inch square I cut out at each corner.
  • Question
How much fabric do I need to get for a 30x 30 blanket?
    Community Answer
If you want it to finish at 30x30, you'll want about 38x38" of fabric to cut 4" strips around the outside. Most stores overcut by a little so you could ask for a yard (36") and you'll get enough. You'll have plenty in the width - fleece is usually 60" wide. You will want that amount for each layer.
