On Honda vehicles, like the Civic, the Oil Life percentage indicates just how much healthy oil you have left until you need an oil change. If the Oil Life is at 55%, then 55% of your oil is still good (you need an oil change if you’re under 15%, just FYI). But if you change the oil and the Oil Life is under 100% or you want to ensure you’re getting the most accurate Oil Life reading available, you may want to reset the system. In this article, we’ll show you how to do it regardless of what Civic model you’ve got.

Things You Should Know

  • Turn the electrical on but don’t start the engine before resetting the Oil Life.
  • Newest models: Press the menu button, select Maintenance, select Oil Life, and hit the Reset button.
  • Older models: Press and hold SEL/RESET until the oil life indicator blinks, let go, and hold it down again.
  • Older models with no screen: Use the Trip knob to cycle to Oil Life and then hold the knob down until it resets.

    Do not suppress the brake like you normally would when you’re turning the vehicle on. Just hit the push-to-start button on its own to turn the auxiliary power on. On some models, you may need to press the button twice to do this. [1]

    If you have a press-to-start button, press the button once or twice without depressing the brake pedal to turn the electrical on. If you have a traditional key, turn it to the “On” position. [6]

    Let the Oil Life indicator blink for a few seconds. Then, press and hold the SEL/RESET button again until the Oil Life indicator turns off entirely. You’ve now successfully reset the Oil Life. [8]
