Keep reading so you can show everyone else how it’s done, done, done!
Rumi Dragon Braid Hair Tutorial
- Make a small ponytail at the front of your head, securing it with a hair tie.
- Make a second ponytail just behind the first, at the top of your head.
- Split the first ponytail in half, then bring the second ponytail up over the first.
- Bring the two halves of the first ponytail down, wrapping around the base of the second.
- Add a little more hair to the first ponytail and secure it into a new pony (behind the second).
- Repeat the previous steps as you braid all of your hair, continuing the split, flip, bring around, and combine steps each time.
- Fluff out your hair each time you make a new stitch in the braid, so you get the same volume as Rumi!
Steps
Section 1 of 4:
Rumi’s Hair Tutorial (Dragon Braid Version)
-
1Make a small ponytail at the front of your head. Gather a small section of the hair closest to your forehead, just at the top of your head, and make a ponytail with it (using a hair tie to secure it). To get as much volume as possible, try fluffing the secured hair a little bit, so it looks puffy—like Rumi’s braid does. [1] X Research source
-
2Make a second ponytail just behind the first. Scoop some more hair from around and behind the first ponytail you made. You can do this easily by hand, although you can also use a comb to horizontally part out each section of hair, if you prefer! Either way, create a second ponytail with this bunch of hair, tying it on top of your head after the first one. [2] X Research source
- At this point, you should have two small ponytails on top of your head.

3Split the first (top) ponytail in half to start a “pull-through” braid. Separate the top ponytail so one half is on the right and the other is on the left. Take both halves and let them fall around either side of your head, so they stay separated for the moment. Then, grab your second ponytail and pull it up, over the base of the first pony, so it’s essentially hanging down over your forehead.
-
4Bring the two halves of the top ponytail around the second. Wrap the two halves of your top ponytail so they’re wrapped around the base of the second, meeting back up to form a complete ponytail once more. Before you tie those pieces of hair together, grab a little more hair and create a new ponytail from that. [3] X Research source
- This new ponytail should consist of the hair from your top ponytail, plus the new hair you just gathered.
- The second ponytail should still be separate, hanging forward while you work.
-
5Fluff the hair in your in-progress braid a bit more. You should now have a partial dragon braid at the top of your head, with the hair from your first and second ponytails woven together. Find the seams of this braid and pull the hair out a little, so it looks more voluminous.
-
6Repeat the previous steps with your two new ponytails. Now, what was previously the second ponytail should be the first, with a new ponytail behind it. Perform the same steps you just did—separating the first ponytail in half, pulling the second ponytail up and over, and bringing the two halves of the first ponytail back down around the base of the second (once again adding more hair to the new ponytail). [4] X Research source
- When you’re done with each new “stitch” in the braid, be sure to fluff it out and add volume!
-
7Continue until you’ve braided all of your hair. You’ll hit a point in the braiding process where all of your hair will be fully incorporated into the braid. After that, just keep the process going—with the split, flip, bring around, combine steps you’ve been following—without adding more hair, using just the two ponytails as you work down the length of your hair.
-
8Tie the last pieces of the two ponytails together at the ends. When you reach a point where you can’t braid anymore, just grab a hair tie and secure the end of the braid by tying the two ponytails together. Remember: you should be stopping and fluffing each section of braid as you go because you won’t be able to do it when the braid is complete! [5] X Research source
- With that, you have created Rumi’s braid from KPop Demon Hunters!
- Tip: To help keep the braid straight, try alternating shoulders as you work (meaning you can pull the braid over one shoulder for a bit, then pull it over the other).
-
9Add some clips and other accessories to the braid, if you like. If you look at Rumi’s hair in the movie, you’ll notice her wearing accessories in her hair most of the time. You don’t have to add anything if you don’t want—but, for a little extra flair, try adding clips, hoops, pins, or other decorative elements!
- If you’re going for Rumi’s “Golden” look specifically, you’ll want metallic gold-colored accessories.

Bonus: Mira’s Hair Tutorial (Half-Up)
-
1Pull out a few pieces of face-framing hair. This refers to the strands of hair that fall around the sides of your face (like Mira has). Pull them out and forward, so they’re separate from the rest of your hair and won’t get pulled around when you start styling! [7] X Research source
-
2Make a part stretching to the top of your head. Start right in front of your ears (both of them) and go to the top of your head, separating the hair in front of the part from the hair in back. To keep them separate, clip or tie the hair behind your part temporarily, so you can easily work with the front section.
-
3Split the front section of the part in half. You should end up with an even amount of hair on either side of your head.
-
4Make matching twin ponytails with the parted hair. Gather the hair on one side of your face and pull it up into a high ponytail, lining it up diagonally with your eye (so it’s sitting directly above your ear). Once that ponytail is secure, do the same thing with the other side, so you have symmetrical-looking ponytails on either side of your head. [8] X Research source
-
5Release the rest of your hair—and enjoy! You should still have some hair from behind your part tied up to prevent it from getting in the way. Let it hang loose, with the two ponytails on either side of your head and the face-framing strands in front. Now, you look just like Mira! [9] X Research source

Bonus: Zoey’s Hair Tutorial (Braided Buns)
-
1Pull out a few pieces of face-framing hair. Just like Mira, Zoey has a few pieces of hair falling around her face; if you have face-framing hair, too, pull the strands out and forward so they’re separate from the rest.
-
2Make a middle part down the center of your head. Using a comb, draw a straight part from your forehead to the back of your head, right down the center of your scalp. This should separate your hair evenly, giving you two bunches—one on each side of your head.
-
3Put both bunches of hair into low ponytails. These ponytails should sit around the same height as your ear (though there should be a couple of inches of space between the ponytail and your actual ear).
-
4Create a regular three-strand braid with each ponytail. That means you’ll need to separate each ponytail into three strands, and braid them together—just like you would with any ordinary braid. Be sure to braid all the way to the ends of your hair, tying each braid off with as little hair remaining as possible. [10] X Research source
-
5Wrap each braid into a bun. Take one of your braids and start wrapping it around its base (where the hair tie was holding your ponytail in place originally). Keep wrapping the braid around itself in circles—kind of like a cinnamon roll! Then, with hairpins, just pin the bottom and center of the bun to hold it in place. When you’re done, do the same thing with the second braid. [11] X Research source
- Don’t pin the top of the bun; instead, let it hang out a little bit. If you look at Zoey’s hair, you’ll notice hers doing the same!
- With that, you’re all done! You’ve nailed Zoey’s signature KPop Demon Hunters style.
