Are you looking for the Sword of Darkness in Elden Ring? It's a powerful sword that can be switched to Sword of Light at an altar, but how do you get it? You must have the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and the Stone-Sheathed Sword, which you can find by following this guide. You can, however, find the Stone-Sheathed Sword in 2 other altar locations (there are 3 total), but you don't have to use the altars in a specific order since they change based on what altars you've already used. Once you have the Stone-Sheathed Sword, you can turn it into the Sword of Light or Darkness at the other 2 altars. Follow this guide to easily get the Sword of Darkness and learn more about its uses.

Quickly Get the Sword of Darkness

  • Get the Stone-Sheathed Sword from 1 of 3 altars, then go to the Darkness Altar.
  • Since the Altars convert your sword, you can only have one at a time: Sword of Darkness or Sword of Light.
  • The positions of the altars never change, but their purpose does, depending on where you get the Stone-Sheathed Sword.

  1. Looking at the map, you're heading to an area to the north of the bridge.
    • You'll know you're in the right area if you run through a lot of graves along a cliffside.
    • You'll also need two additional items in your inventory to continue: 2 Redflesh Mushroom and 2 Ember of Messmer.
    • Follow these steps to get the Stone-Sheathed Sword, which you need before you can get the Sword of Darkness.
  2. You'll see a message on the screen that you've entered the Run-Down Traveler's Rest.
    • After you've looted the 3 items from this shack, you can leave.

  3. The entrance to the underground area is directly east of the Site of Grace.
    • If you don't have that Site of Grace, go to the Fort of Reprimand and fly up 2 wind vortexes. Once up, follow the path north to the ruins. If you don't have that Site of Grace, you can start at Castle Enis and follow the dark path on the map to the south.
    • You have to break rocks on top of the vortex holes to initiate them.
  4. You have to go through Moorth Ruins to find Bonny Village. Basically, once you're underground, continue following the tunnels and jumping down. A ladder will take you up into the village.
  5. You can find 1 on the edge of the broken bridge and the other is found past the broken bridge, near lots of enemies, and inside a shed.
    • You can easily cross the gap that the bridge used to cross by double-jumping with Torrent.
  6. There are bosses in this area, so be prepared if you haven't already cleared the Keep!
  7. When you cross into the Keep, you'll see a giant statue in the middle of the courtyard. Turn left to go into the first room.
  8. Follow the stairs up to the right until you get to a large room that looks like a dining room; head to the back and exit through the large hole in the wall.
  9. You'll run past burning boats and the ladder is on the left, which takes you down into ankle-high water.
  10. There's a room behind the waterfall with another ladder.
  11. The wall will disappear to reveal a hidden path.
    • Go through this path and use the coffin at the end.
    • Using the coffin prompts a short cut-scene and you'll be transported to another area, Scadu Altus.
  12. It's the Ruins of Unte.
    • Using Torrent, you can climb, scale, and jump along the rooftops to get a good positioning where you're looking directly at the inactive Furnace Golem.
  13. Go to your crafting menu and the "Throwing Pots" tab, then select Hefty Furnace Pot . It requires 2 Redflesh Mushroom, 2 Ember of Messmer, and 1 Furnace Visage.
  14. His head will light and he will become an active enemy.
    • You can run into the room that he was blocking to avoid fighting him, or you can stay where you are and confront this mini-boss.
    • The Furnace Golem's legs aren't armored, so you can easily hit his legs to make him fall down, then stab his face to deal massive damage.
  15. You'll find an altar.
    • On that altar is the Stone-Sheathed Sword.

  1. You'll run through crags and cliffs on a lower level.
    • You want to find a mausoleum-looking building in a small graveyard.
  2. This labyrinth-like dungeon is harder to navigate through, but follow this guide to get to the altar quickly.
  3. The way ahead of you is blocked with collapsed rubble, so take the path to the left to continue.
    • In the next room, there are spiked platforms that will smash you. Be aware of your surroundings as you progress through this room to the other side.
    • Hide in the cubbies on the sides of the room to avoid the spiky platforms.
  4. The room is after a small downward slope and turning left will bring you down more stairs.
    • Don't immediately jump down into the next room because there's another large platform with spikes on the bottom that will squish you.
  5. Do a 180 and hide under the archway until the spikes drop again.
    • As soon as the spikes slam into the ground and lift up, you can run across the room.
  6. Run down some stairs when you cross the room with the spikes, then take the lift to go further down.
  7. Once you're off the lift, keep running straight, take some stairs down, and follow the path.
  8. Go to the first cubby, wait for the spikes to slam into the ground, then run to the second cubby.
    • Hide in as many cubbies as you need to in order to cross the room. Getting hit by those spikes is a lot of damage!
  9. You want to trigger the spiked platforms to drop.
    • You'll see another cubby in the platform as it crashes down.
  10. It might take you a few tries to get on and off since the platforms move quickly!
  11. You'll see another archway at the back toward the beginning of the room that you can only access if you're on top of the spiked platforms.
  12. It's on the right side.
  13. You'll now have a Sword of Darkness. You can switch to Sword of Light by using the other altar, in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh.

Light Altar (Ancient Ruins of Ruah)

  1. This is another area in the Shadow Keep. Go straight until you're next to the pile of books on the platform in the middle, then take a sharp left to another room.
    • Follow this path to a lift that takes you down.
  2. Watch out for the enemy that pops through the open window on your left.
  3. There are a good amount of enemies in the way.
    • Turn left into the room with all the pots and right towards a gold decoration hanging from a wall.
    • Turn left down that hallway and down more stairs.
  4. There are enemies on the bridge and one at the very end of the bridge; you can stop to fight them or run past them.
    • A large wall blocks the bridge path, but you can take the tiny archway on the side to continue down the bridge on Torrent.
  5. As soon as you're across the bridge and inside, go right and up a curved stairway to a lift that takes you up even more.
  6. Take a few steps forward, and you'll see a notification that you've entered the Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
  7. There's a path you can follow west and underground.
  8. As soon as you get underground, remain on Torrent, run to the back wall, and turn right towards a large set of doors. Turn left at the doors to go through an archway where you'll see a large fiery plinth with an open area around it that drops to another level.
    • Try to jump on the left side of this plinth since it's a straight run from the drop to another set of doors.
  9. Once you drop down, there's a set of large doors that you will need to open and go through.
    • Opening them takes a second, so you'll need to get back on Torrent once you're done.
  10. You can double-jump on Torrent to cushion the fall, but there's also a wind vortex to help you not fall to your death.
  11. Once you fall down, go straight to the carving in the wall and turn left.
  12. You'll continue under more arches and head to daylight.
  13. You'll see a Coliseum-looking building to the right.
    • Rest at the Site of Grace before continuing.
  14. This will allow you to avoid the fire beam from the Golem ahead.
    • Use Torrent's double-jump to cross from the aqueduct to the path on the right.
  15. The path heads in a south-easterly direction and takes you up to a cliff to another Site of Grace.
    • Be careful of the Golem's slam attacks; re-mount Torrent when you fall off.
    • Rest at this Site of Grace if you need to.
  16. Stay on the left side.
    • Ride up multiple sets of stairs.
  17. You'll pass a stone gazebo and head into another set of ruins.
    • Continue straight and take a right at the dead-end.
  18. You want to leave the ruins with the orange floor from the archway on the far left; when you do, you'll see what looks like a crumbled stone bridge.
  19. An invisible bridge will prevent you from falling as you run towards the tower.
  20. This will change the Stone-Sheathed Sword to the Sword of Light.

General Info & Tips

  1. Visit the corresponding altars to switch their effects:
    • If you found the Stone-Sheathed Sword in the Ruins of Unte (as in this guide), the Darkness Altar is in the Fog Rift Catacombs and the Light Altar is in the Ancient Ruins of Ruah.
    • You can always traverse to the Fog Rift Catacombs first to get the Stone-Sheathed Sword; in that case, the Darkness Alter is at the Ruins of Unte and the Light Alter is in the Ancient Ruins of Ruah.
  2. It's impossible in your solo gameplay, but you can ask another player to drop the one that you don't have.
  3. For example, if you upgrade the sword at all, those bonuses will stick on the weapon even if you change it from Stone-Sheathed Sword to Sword of Darkness or Sword of Light.
    • If you convert a +10 Sword of Light, you'll have a +10 Sword of Darkness.
  4. When you raise the sword to engulf your enemies in darkness, they take holy damage. The skill costs 30 FP, and the sword cannot be imbued with Ashes of War, food/drink buffs, or grease.
  5. The sword's holy damage is based on your faith; the more faith you have, the stronger the sword.
    • Use Somber Smithing Stones to upgrade the weapon at a blacksmith. [1]
