Nutritional yeast is deactivated yeast. It is yellow in color and comes in a flake or powdered form. It is a great source of proteins and vitamins, particularly that of B-complex vitamins. It is naturally low in fat, sodium, and is free from sugar, dairy or gluten. Nutritional yeast is commonly purchased through health food stores, or stores such as Bulkbarn (Canada).

It is commonly used by vegetarians and vegans as a substitute for cheese, as it gives off a nutty, cheesy, creamy taste. Not only can it be incorporated in soups, but nutritional yeast has also been a delicious agent to the following dishes: dairy-free macaroni and cheese pasta, mashed and baked potatoes, scrambled tofu, pizza, roasted vegetables, and popcorn seasoning. Read on to learn how to incorporate nutritional yeast into your everyday soups!

I store nutritional yeast in a glass jar at room temperature. When purchased from the store, it might come in a refillable plastic bag or a plastic bottle with a pour-shaker spout. Despite these options, I prefer to buy it and transfer it to a mason jar for storage at room temperature.
  • Question
How do I make the nutritional yeast?
    Jemima Bamidele
    Community Answer
Nutritional yeast is a food additive made from a single-celled organism, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, which is grown on molasses and then harvested, washed, and dried with heat to kill or “deactivate” it. You should purchase it rather than attempting to make it on your own.
  • Question
How long does the nutritional yeast last in soup?
    Community Answer
It should last 3-4 days if properly stored.
