6 Ways to Quickly Zoom Out on a Mac

Your Mac makes it easy to change your zoom level on either your whole screen or just an active window or document. You’ll need to activate some of these features in your computer’s accessibility settings, but don’t worry—it’s very simple to set up. We’ll teach you how to zoom in or out on all or part of your screen with a simple keyboard shortcut, trackpad gesture, or mouse action.

Quick Guide to Zooming Out on Mac

If you’ve enabled zoom keyboard shortcuts in Accessibility, zoom out with ⌥ Option + ⌘ Command + - or ⌥ Option + ⌘ Command + 8 .

Press ⌥ Option + ⌘ Command + = to zoom in. This enlarges the entire screen. Continue pressing this keyboard shortcut to zoom in as far as you'd like to go.

Press ⌥ Option + ⌘ Command + - to zoom out. This zooms the entire screen back out. As with zooming in, you can continue pressing this shortcut to zoom out as far as necessary.
- Unlike the Option-Command-8 command, this command will zoom you out in increments. So, if you zoomed in multiple times for a really close-up view, you’d have to use this command repeatedly to return to default resolution.

If you're using a mouse that has a physical scroll wheel, a mouse with a multi-touch surface (such as the Apple Magic Mouse), or a laptop trackpad, you can use it to zoom and out in any window by associating a "modifier" key. This makes it so you can press a key (such as Command) while you scroll up or down on the wheel/surface to zoom. Here's how to enable this:
- Click the Apple menu and select System Settings .
- Click the Accessibility icon (the blue-and-white person icon).
- Click Zoom in the right panel.
- Toggle the switch next to "Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom."

Select a zoom style from the dropdown menu. Next to the Zoom style header, click the dropdown menu. You can choose from Full Screen, Split Screen, or Picture-in-Picture.
- Full screen will show your entire screen zoomed in or out, while the other options will use a split screen or a smaller window to show the screen both zoomed in and at regular resolution.

Press ⌘ Command + + to zoom in. Holding these keys down at the same time enlarges the content of the window so you can get a better look.
- Continue pressing the + (plus) key to zoom in as far as you need to.

Double-tap in certain apps to smart zoom. If you’re using a web browser or a PDF viewer, you can zoom in or out by double-tapping your trackpad with two fingers. Place your cursor over the part of the page where you want to zoom in, then double tap with both fingers. Double tap again to zoom out.

How can I just view larger text in a Mac email, without increasing the font or zooming the whole Window, like you would use the zoom slider in a word processor or Outlook?

I believe if you go to Settings and click on display, you may be able to change the font size of your applications.
