  • Question
How high should a pendant lamp be?
    Community Answer
If it was over a dining room table the light should illuminate the whole table to the top of the chair backs. This keeps the harshest part of the light out of the eyes while sitting. Typically 66 inches off the floor is best.
  • Question
At what height should I put a mini pendant from the ceiling in the living room? Or, how much room from the floor?
    Community Answer
Usually when over a table in a dining room it should be about 5 feet from the ground if the ceiling is 7-8 feet.

      Tips

      • Provide plenty of clearance for your taller family members and friends. Even if there is technically enough room, people still have a tendency to duck their heads if a light feels too low.
      • Consider a retractable cord for your fixture that will allow you to vary the light amount it gives.
      • When hanging pendant lights over a kitchen island or counter, plan for about one lamp for every two feet of counter space. This will provide enough light for a proper working space.

      Warnings

      • Pendant lighting should only be installed by a qualified electrician as it involves wiring electrical appliances. In addition, some types of chandelier lighting can be heavy.

      About This Article

      Article Summary X

Pendant lamps are great for adding some decorative lighting to your room. Before you install the lamps, you’ll need to figure out where you want them to hang and how high up you’ll need to place them. In general, lamps hanging above a kitchen table or island can be a little lower, usually between 28 to 34 inches from the lamp to the table. If you’re hanging a lamp over the floor, it should be a bit higher. You’ll probably want at least 84 to 96 inches from the bottom of the light to the floor. Have another person hold the lamp at the height you want as you practice walking around or sitting down at the table. This way, you can make sure the lamp won’t be in the way. To learn how your table shape can factor into your lighting decisions, read on!
