    • Litmus papers are strips of paper that contain an acid or a base (alkaline). The red strips turn blue if the substance is alkaline, and the blue strips turn red if they contact an acid.   1. Acidity and alkalinity (the term used to describe bases) are both defined by the hydrogen ions they lose or accept. An acid is a substance that loses (or, some say, donates) hydrogen ions. A base is a substance that accepts additional hydrogen ions. [10]

When an acidic or alkaline substance is added to water, they change the proportion of hydroxide and hydronium ions. [11]

    Litmus paper only gives you a quick check to see if your solution is acidic, neutral or basic. So if your solution is acidic, you still don't know if the pH is 2 or 6. For better accuracy, I would use either a pH meter or pH paper (described above).
