Are you a Reddit user wondering "how do I post on Reddit?" Well, you're in the right place! Posting to Reddit is easy whether you’re on a computer or using the Reddit mobile app for iPhone and Android. Before posting on Reddit, you may also want to review common posting etiquette, just to make sure you don’t accidentally break any rules.

Posting on Reddit

  • Select the “create” button to submit your post.
  • You can post things to your personal profile or select a relevant subreddit for your post.
  • You’re able to share text, external links, images, or videos on most subreddits.
  • Abide by Reddit’s site-wide rules and review a subreddit’s posting guidelines before submitting anything.

  1. You have two options from the dropdown menu. Select where you want to post. Your options are: [1]
    • Your profile. By posting to your profile, your content will only appear on your personal page. Unless you have a lot of followers on Reddit, it's unlikely anyone will see posts here.
    • Any subreddit. Below the option to post to your profile, you can choose a specific subreddit to submit your post to (e.g., worldnews ).
    • Remember that many subreddits have their own set rules, so be sure to follow them before posting to avoid having your post removed by moderators.

  2. You have four options when it comes to what you’re allowed to post on Reddit. Select the option that applies to the content you’re sharing. Your options are:
    • Text. This is for text-only posts.
    • Link. Use this option to post an external link from another web domain.
    • Images & Video. This is the option if you want to upload a photo or video from your computer.
    • Poll. Select this choice if you want to poll the members of a specific community.
    • Some subreddits only have one post option, while others have several more specific post options.
  3. Find the "title" text box, then type the title of your post into the text box. Then, compose your text post, upload your media, or copy and paste the external link you’re sharing.
    • When posting a link, you'll find the "title" text box near the middle of the form.
  4. You may be asked to complete a CAPTCHA to prove you aren’t a robot before your post goes live.
    • Some subreddits require moderator approval before they go live. If you’re posting to a restricted subreddit, a moderator will have to review your content before it goes live.
    • Some subreddits also won’t allow posts from newer accounts with no karma (the “points” you earn for posting and commenting). If you want to get around these restrictions, comment on some popular posts to build your profile’s karma up.

Observing Posting Etiquette

  1. These rules govern posting everywhere on Reddit: [3]
    • Don't post any sexual content featuring children or minors. This includes suggestive content.
    • Don't spam. Spamming is the practice of rapidly posting the same thing over and over again or filling up posts with repeated information.
    • Don't try to affect how people vote on your posts. Everything from begging to asking politely is forbidden.
    • Don't post personal information. This includes your own information and that of others.
    • Don't damage or interfere with the site itself.
  2. Subreddits are governed by their own secondary rules underneath Reddit's global rule set. Most of these are written as content restrictions.
    • To learn the specific rules for a subreddit, tap the subreddit's link, tap the menu button in the top-right corner of the screen, and tap Community Info (mobile), or check the right side of the main page of that subreddit (desktop).
    • Breaking subreddit rules won't get you in serious trouble with the site, but it can get you and your post(s) removed from that subreddit. It will also irritate other users of the subreddit.
  3. Reddiquette is a combination of “Reddit” and “etiquette” that describes a set of common Dos and Don'ts of conduct throughout most of the site. Some of the more important pieces of reddiquette include:
    • Be courteous. Other commenters and posters are human just like you. Consider what you would say if you confronted this person face-to-face before posting.
    • Vote on other people’s comments and submissions. Make sure that you only use the downvote option for content or comments that don't fit the subreddit or don't add anything to the conversation.
    • Don't downvote simply because you don't agree with the other person.
    • Make thoughtful posts, stay abreast of new posts, and link to outside sources responsibly. Meaning, you should contribute to the conversation at hand in a meaningful manner. Redditors do not take kindly to blatant spam or self-promotion. If you are upfront about what your link is, and it contributes to the conversation and is applicable, then by all means post. Blatant self-promotion or attempts to garner traffic are usually not met favorably.
    • Let people know why you edited your comment. It is common courtesy to explain why your post has been edited, as everyone can see which posts have been edited.
    • Don't be intentionally rude. Reddit strives to foster an active community, and rudeness undermines that.
    • Don't start or participate in trolling and flame wars, which are attacks on other users without contributing to the discussion.
