First, try using a spare key that you don't normally use. If that works, your main key is probably worn down through normal usage. Also, check the tumbler. It might be worn down from usage, or it could have been damaged if someone tried to steal the car. Also, check the neutral safety switch or shift linkage—if it's not being put in the proper position, the steering and ignition lock can get affected.
  • Question
My steering wheel is locked and the windshield wipers won't shut off. How do I fix it?
    Community Answer
Apply pressure to the ignition key (twisting in direction to start) while trying to move the steering wheel from side to side. The steering wheel should release.
  • Question
Can I unlock the steering wheel without a key?
    Community Answer
No. The steering wheel lock is secured by the ignition cylinder lock.
  • Question
How do I unlock and lock my steering wheel on my keyless car?
    Community Answer
Use your key fob to lock or unlock the door. The battery in the fob can be the problem sometimes. If it's loose or needs to be replaced, it won't work sometimes.
  • Question
What do I do if my steering is jammed and the battery light turns on when the engine is turned on?
    Community Answer
If the car has power steering, the wheel will lock up if there is no power going to it and if the battery light is on the battery might be low and could be "borrowing" power from less vital systems, like power steering and windows, to get the engine started. If the engine does indeed start, then let it run like you would after getting a jump-start to let the battery reenergize to get power back to the steering column. If the problem persists, or the battery light remains on for an extended period of time, you may need to replace the battery.
