QuestionCan I put a second-hand door onto an existing frame?Community AnswerYes, I actually have one like that now. Just be aware of where all of the holes and hinges line up. In most cases, you can just make new holes and places for the hinges, but sometimes it's better (and easier) to just get a different (not necessarily new) door.

QuestionPut a new lock in, but when we lock it, the key won't come out. What should I do?Community AnswerRemove the lock and send it back to the store you bought it from. The lock is defective.

QuestionWhat do I do if the threading of the holding screw has been ruined? How do I get the lock and screw out?Community AnswerPurchase a set of screw extractors, specially designed drill bits created to extract screws. They can be purchased at home improvement stores, major hardware stores, or online. You will also need a drill with reverse capability.

QuestionI lost my key for my security door and I bought a new lock body to change the angle. Will I be able to remove the old lock without the key?Community AnswerNo, not without picking the lock or damaging the door. The keyhole cylinders have a resting position that prevents a removal without a key.

QuestionI have a loose conservatory door handle and there are no visible screws or fixings, so I cannot move it. How can I take the handle off?Community AnswerIf this is the outer handle that is loose, try tightening the screws on the inner handle as they frequently have long screws right through to fix both handles.

QuestionWhat if I have lost the key?Community AnswerUnless you're skilled enough to pick the lock or are willing to damage the door by forcefully removing it, there is no other way to remove a cylinder keyhole even if the door is unlocked because it's resting position is purposefully made to prevent removal without a key. Call a locksmith.

QuestionWhat do I do if my new cylinder has a stiff point when locking and unlocking?Community AnswerTry lubricating it with oil. If that doesn't work, change the barrel.

QuestionWhat do I do if my UPVC door handle is coming loose?Community AnswerIs it the inside or outside? Is it only the handle or is it the handle plus its (decorative) surrounds? If it is only the handle which is loose, you might need to replace both handles as one or both of the springs might be worn. If the entire handle + the plate are loose, then that is not so bad: In most cases, the decorative handle and its cover on the innermost side needs to be removed and then you should see a plate which - along with two long screws - actually secures the outer handle and its surround-in-place. Tighten these two screws and the outer components will stop moving, as they are held in place against the door by this inner plate and its screws.
