While editing articles, I often have to choose between American and British english. Which one should I use?
To describe the article linked above in a nutshell, consistency is key. For instance, if an article is written in British English, it wouldn’t be acceptable to change “colour” to “color”. Similarly, if a title is written in British English but the content is in American English, the article should be edited so that the words are spelled in British English to reflect the title.
If the articles mostly use British English, just use British English. Same goes to articles that mostly use American English.
We have talked about this severaltimes before, and have asked editors on here to respect the original author’s choice of English. Per Illneedasaviour, yes, we consider it not acceptable to change the British spelling to America’s standards, unless you are editing the article to be consistent with the English in the title.

U.S. Brits have an exquisite vocabulary far more superior to you Americans. I say British.
