Continuing the discussion from Proposed Policy: Accessibility Amendment to the Talk Page Policy :

Since it seems almost certain that this policy proposal is going to pass, with almost everyone voting supportor neutral, I think it would be good to draft a template to discuss talk page policy and, more or less, accessibility.

Per @R2_d2000 , I am creating a linked discussion to talk about drafting and creating a template.

I already started a template draft at User: Awesome Aasim/Template:Accessibility - wikiHow if anyone would like to comment on it.

@JayneG can you move comments on the proposed template to this discussion thread to help consolidate discussion about it?

Certain talk page designs can be infuriating for users as they try to use them for communication

I’d suggest rephrasing this line somewhat, e.g. “Some talk page designs can make it difficult for other users to use the page for communication”.

The use of ‘infuriating’ seems somewhat out of place - whilst it may well be true that people do find certain designs infuriating, it feels to me that an implication of anger might set some users on the defensive (particularly younger/newer users who often have the more problematic designs)

The talk page policy has not been implemented yet. Also, I oppose this template. I don’t like the way that it is formatted. I don’t think that it should be like the username template. I’d prefer a message that is only a few sentences long, and fits into one paragraph.

I’ll crosspost the template suggestion that Jayne mentioned in the other thread:

I don’t see any need to deviate from this, except to add reason parameters.

Then… what would be a good second sentence for this paragraph? Two sentences make this feel awkward a little.

The reason why talk pages need to be accessible is because they are extremely important communication tools for wikiHow editors. Certain talk page designs can be infuriating for users as they try to use them for communication. For this reason, if your design interferes with the user interface, then it will be edited or removed.

It’s nice we’re thinking ahead with the proposal, although it looks like Jayne has already proposed a nice workable solution for a template.

I wouldn’t get too hyper-focused on the verbiage in your user space, @Awesome_Aasim , since we already have a good option from Jayne.

I think it’s best to keep things short and simple, especially since it’s usually very young users who are in violation of these proposed policy changes.

It’s says “You simply have to change your talk page design so it complies with our talk page policy”

Link the part that says “talk page policy” to the talk page policy so they know the policies.
It will then be Talk page policy

It is already linked at the beginning, although I am considering scrapping and putting @JayneG ’s wording into the template.

Okay, @JayneG I did a scrap and adopted your wording. 100%. I just added that talk pages also need to be accessible to those with disabilities like dyslexia or color blindness.

I don’t think we can adequately address colorblindness. Text already needs to be black on white, and we can’t really make any rules on what colors can and can’t be used - and colorblindness can vary so much in and of itself. I would remove that.

Ok. BTW anyone is free to edit the draft template in my user space:slight_smile:so go ahead if you would like

Jayne’s message works for me!

  1. The policy proposal has passed. That means that a template would be appropriate.
  2. It appears that there is consensus to use @JayneG ’s wording. However, I did include the #switch: in there as well in case we would like to give an explanation.

If there are no other comments in the next few days, I will move the draft template to template-space. Thanks all for your feedback!

I made one last change to the draft template at User: Awesome Aasim/Template:Talkpolicy - wikiHow . If there are no problems, then I plan to move this to template space tomorrow.

Please just use Jayne’s wording and stick to that. The longer the template gets, the more unwieldy it risks being, and many people have pointed out that Jayne’s wording is fine.

Aaaand… done!

The new template can be found at Template:Talkpolicy - wikiHow . I commented out the #switch for now as there is no consensus as to whether that should be used. If consensus arises later, we can uncomment it out and use it.

@anon74718567 can you add mention of the warning template on the talk page policy page?
