Hey guys!
@Yoursilhouette
asked me a question about emoticons in articles. Are they allowed? And if so, there is probably a limit to how many, right? - Kirby
You mean like :), :D, :P, etc?
I don’t think there is a limit, but if it is used unnecessarily, you might as well edit it out. What if there was an article entitled “How to Use Emoticons”?

I want to say that I’ve seen an article somewhere that formally says they shouldn’t be used in articles, but I can’t seem to find it now. I did find http://www.wikihow.com/Copyedit-a-wikiHow-Article
which mentions that you can find poorly written pages by searching for emoticons, but that’s in the title - not in the content itself. If the article is ABOUT emoticons I think they’d probably be okay. But more often you will find articles that simply have random smiley faces within the steps or elsewhere, and they don’t really contribute to the article. Personally, I always remove those. While emoticons might add friendliness to the articles, in excess they somewhat take away from the professionalism and format of our pages, just like when you make the text of an article all different colors.

I find more smileys at the end of introductions, steps, and tips in youth-related articles… if it’s not specifically pertaining to how to make an emoticon, I remove 'em from the article.
I dunno, I always take out the smileys when I come across them.

Remove them. They contribute nothing and could be ‘held’ against us as a serious entity.
When there is smileys in articles, it’s a good sign that the article is plain dumb

There actually is an article with a similar title like that.
i think the smileys in articles are cute… however they also give off an unprofessional vibe.
I do think emoticons in articles are unnecessary. I delete them when I see them. And i agree with Pageypanda, I think they give the article an unprofessional vibe.
They make me think that a 12 year old girl wrote the article, so I investigate how old the writer is, and see if the person is under 13.
Thanks for making a forum about this @Kirby
. I’m glad this was discussed.

They should not be allowed anywhere (anywhere meaning they shouldn’t exist).
