Similarly to the forums, I suggest that on user pages, there should be an online and offline icon (green and grey circle perhaps) and, if the user is offline, when they were last online. Comment below to support this feature, give suggestions, or anything other related to this topic.

Sounds good to me. In order to know if someone is online on talk pages, I check their last activity which shows when it was done. But a proper signal would be even better:slight_smile:

I was wondering, so forums has an online sign ???

Actually we do have that feature.:slight_smile:If you manage to get to your notifications, you’ll see your info across your profile. Like mine:

So. . . let’s talk to an admin about this. @Anna ?

Just clearing up- Is this a request for the implementation of a light green or white ‘online offline’ bubble on the forums, or rather site-spread? We’ve had discussions about main site online offlines.

Keep in mind that all these ideas also require lots of engineering time that may be better spent elsewhere.

@Marina I think @Skyllful was suggesting it be implemented on the wiki (specifically on user pages). I’m not really sure why we need this though. I think many users wouldn’t appreciate being able to be “tracked” so to speak, myself included.

Also, Vishwa’s suggestion of checking the user’s contributions is a great idea. If someone’s made a contribution in the last few minutes, they’re probably still online. If not, they’ll be back soon.

Actually, the handy “My Recent Activity” widget on the right side of anyone’s user page shows the latest contributions, including patrols and talk page messages left, so you don’t even have to “check” the contributions manually to find out when someone was last active.

I don’t think this is really needed, since you can already see how long they were active before. It may be obvious they aren’t active if it’s been a long time since they’ve made a contribution.

Thanks for clearing that up @Isorhythmic , they just didn’t read the full explanation beyond the title. I am aware of the recent changes bubble. Since the user might not actually be making edits, I’d like this feature so recent activity could be more specific. Carter

I realize you are requesting it.:slight_smile:I am saying we don’t need it and that there is a reasonable alternative already present on the site.

Thanks DragonZkai7 and Jeffrey.

I agree with Marina.the time to program that feature could be spent Better. but if it were possible it is not a bad idea. I usually can figure out who is active on the recent changes feed to the right of the screen when youre on desktop. While on an article page. We just gotta make lemonade if we only got lemons.

Please bear in mind that our site engineers have a LOT on their plates.  The underlying wikimedia software is more oriented toward editing needs and less toward social media needs.

If you’re here primarily for the purpose of connecting with other people on a more personal level?  You may be sorely disappointed.  Sites such as Facebook are MUCH better platforms for that type of connection.

If, however, you’re here to edit a “How To” manual … I think you’ll find the features quite adequate for your needs.
