I don’t know how to make the Red Dot message notification go away. It always indicates that I have messages even when I have read them all. I’ll bet there were instructions that I was supposed to read… somewhere.

Hey @Zack
! With the new notifications system, because the drop down menu holds the most recent 5 messages, it wants you to see those ‘extra ones’ before clearing the number- so if you have more than 5, clicking on ‘view all notifications,’ or going straight to http://wikihow.com/Special:Notifications
should do the trick to clear the number. We know some folks really want it to clear upon Talk page load too, though, so we have an open bug report to see whether an engineer can change it to do that. Watch this space on that score, but in the meantime going to View All should clear it. Hope so! Let me know if it works and if not we’ll dig deeper to see what’s up
@Anna
I’m having a similar issue with this, although: 1) It happens only when I’m logged out 2) The notifications are for two thumbs-ups that say I gave them to my IP address, even though I recall giving them for those edits but obviously intended for different editors 3) The red number box doesn’t disappear even after I view the notifications or click to View All. Perhaps it’s a bug? Let me know if you need more details, I’d be happy to open up a new thread
This happens to me too, but when I am logged in, I click View All Notifications and the red number doesn’t appear.

@Jordan
and @Hailey-Girges
- thanks! We knew something about the red number being funky with logged out, and there’s a bug open for that, but I’ve added your experiences to it, and made a screencast of it, too. I hadn’t figured out the mistake in the IP with logged-out thumbs ups - tricky stuff! I guess when I was testing, I was both the sender and the receiver - I’ll have to get myself one of those browsers that changes my IP for future. But I worked on it with Krystle and we were able to reproduce the issue, so I filed a bug for that, too. Thanks for the heads-up! @Zack
If you’re only talking about logged-in, though, the “View all” should still help!

@Anna
, thanks. However, I had tried this before posting my question… Still got a red blot with a white 4 in it, like a sniper’s red laser aimed at my forehead. That may be an exaggeration…

Hold on… at the bottom of the “Special/Notifications” page, there is “More…” bar. Clicked it and found four notifications in bold text. Clicked on one of them and the red blot evaporated.

Ok, sweet, thanks @Zack
! From what I know of it, you don’t actually even have to click on the bolded text notifications – you just have to “see” them. So going to the “more/view all” bar and clicking on that notifications page itself should do the trick, without that last click on the bolded links (once you reload the page or go to a new page, the number should be gone). We are hoping to get the number to go away from just looking at the Talk page too, though, so hopefully the steps will be reduced in the future! Fingers crossed in hope
