Alpha to Omega: All About Male Hierarchies

In the 1930s, animal behaviorist Rudolph Schenkel studied groups of wolves, hoping to learn something about their behavior and social organization. What he found was that one male wolf tended to rise above the rest, and used behaviors like aggression and dominance to gather the most resources, cementing his role as a leader.

From there, pop scientists took Schenkel’s research and applied it to human males, creating a system of social order that includes alpha males, betas, gammas, sigmas, and other rankings. In theory, every human male fits into one of these rankings, which determines their general disposition and day-to-day behaviors.

There are 2 caveats here. First, is that Schenkel’s research only focused on wolves in captivity. Further research of wild wolf packs in the 60s, primarily by David Mech and other behaviorists, found that wolves are naturally more collaborative and cooperative than Schenkel’s research concluded, and that any “top dogs” usually got there just by mating and having pups, which eventually became their pack—and children usually respect their elders, even in the wild.

Second, wolves aren’t humans, so it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense to apply research about wolves to humans. We’re much more complex, and have an entirely different way of living!

Still, you might say that the Alpha Male Model of human social hierarchy can still be useful in understanding yourself. Thinking about your own personality in these terms can help you get a better picture on your strengths and weaknesses, so long as it doesn’t start influencing how you treat other people. As with any social organizing system, humans are too weird and unpredictable and complex to fit into a neat box.

With all that said, let’s look at the primary roles in the Alpha Male Model of social hierarchy:

  • Alpha males are natural leaders. They’re outgoing, confident, and know how to get things done. They’ll go to great lengths to achieve their goals, and rarely back down from a fight.
  • Beta males are caring, kind, and realistic. They can naturally sympathize with others and see new perspectives, and know that when one person succeeds, everyone succeeds.
  • Gamma males keep the group together as a social unit with their fun, creative, and adventurous personalities. They’re the life of the party, and are eager to help other people unwind.
  • Sigma males are the mavericks of the group. They’re not motivated by power or money, but instead aim to achieve their own personal goals while teaching others how to do things.

And a few extra roles that expand the model:

  • Delta males are the organized and responsible type. They know how to keep the world turning, and are competent and motivated in many areas of life.
  • Zeta males are creative nonconformists. They push society forward by breaking boundaries and doing things other people might find strange or irrational.
  • Omega males are introverts who aren’t motivated by validation. They do things for the love of the field, and are most comfortable when they’re independent or working alone.
