Make sure that your Genie receiver is plugged in. In order for you to program your Genie remote, your Genie receiver must be plugged into your TV and a power source, and the receiver must be powered on.

Ensure that you're using your Genie remote. Genie remotes can have any one of the following model numbers: RC-73, RC-72, RC-71B, or RC-71. You should see the appropriate model number in the upper-left side of your remote.
- If you're using a non-Genie remote, you can't program it for use with your Genie receiver.

Turn on your TV. If your TV isn't set to use the Genie receiver as its input, you'll also need to switch to the Genie receiver's input channel by pressing the Video or Input button before proceeding.
