This wikiHow teaches you how to program your DIRECTV Genie rc73 remote for use with your HDTV or other components. The easiest way to set up your DIRECTV Genie remote is by using automatic setup, but you can also use a code for the item that you want to set up if need be.

  1. In order for you to program your Genie remote, your Genie receiver must be plugged into your TV and a power source, and the receiver must be powered on.
    • Possible models of the Genie receiver include the Genie HD DVR, Genie Mini, and Wireless Genie Mini.
  2. Genie remotes can have any one of the following model numbers: RC-73, RC-72, RC-71B, or RC-71. You should see the appropriate model number in the upper-left side of your remote.
    • If you're using a non-Genie remote, you can't program it for use with your Genie receiver.

  3. If your TV isn't set to use the Genie receiver as its input, you'll also need to switch to the Genie receiver's input channel by pressing the Video or Input button before proceeding.
  4. You should have a direct line of sight from your remote to your Genie receiver.
  5. Doing so will prompt your Genie remote to begin connecting to the receiver.
  6. When you see the green lights flash on the remote flash twice, you can release the buttons. [1]
    • If you don't see the flash or you are otherwise unable to program your DIRECTV Genie remote for use with your TV, try using the manual setup instead.
  7. You should see "Your remote is now setup for RF" appear on-screen when the remote's setup is complete.

  1. You can find your TV model's DIRECTV programming code by doing the following:
    • Go to https://www.directv.com/support/article/000092856 in your browser.
    • Click your Genie remote's model number.
    • Click the TV option.
    • Select your TV's manufacturer (e.g., Samsung ).
    • Scroll down and click Enter my model number
    • Scroll up and type in your TV's model number, then press Enter .
    • Review the five-digit code.

    • Samsung DirecTV Ready TV - 54000
    • Sony DirecTV Ready TV - 54001
    • Toshiba DirecTV Ready TV - 54002

    The RC73 is an RF remote for the DirecTV Genie receiver. The TV and other devices are controlled by it with IR. IR does both, but for different devices.

    I programmed the remote to control my audio receiver, but it only controls the volume. How do I also program the remote to power it on and off?

    According to DirecTV Customer Support, the Genie remote (RC73) cannot turn audio devices on and off. Only the volume can be controlled. (I can't speak to the capabilities of other DirecTV remotes.)
