The small size of Mama means a small litter is usual. Around 1-3 is considered average, although some Chi's do have litters of around 5 pups. Good luck!

    Expert Answer
A female dog should have at least her first season without being bred. She's still a baby herself at that stage and needs to mature before having puppies. Potentially, she could be bred from her second heat, but it's also good to let her mature a little herself, so 2 years onwards is a good time to go ahead.

The female dog should finish growing first and have at least one heat cycle before having pups. Physiologically, at the second heat or after is fine to start breeding. Don't leave it too long, though. If the dog is over 4 years, think seriously about whether it's fair to go ahead.

These little guys are smart! The only thing small about the Chihuahua is their size. The are intelligent and quick to learn - indeed, smarter than many people realize and fully capable of training their owner to do exactly what the Chi wants.
