    You could place torches instead, as they create smoke particles and give off light. You could also use lanterns, as they give off light as well and are partially orange colored. You could also use other orange colored blocks for a pretend fire.

    Fire does not burn coal blocks. Fire/lava will only burn on any type of flammable material, such as wood fences, oak logs, carpets, or tall grass.

    Yes, lit netherrack will burn indefinitely unless put out by the player punching out the fire, the netherrack itself being broken, a block is placed on the fire, rain/flowing water put it out, etc.

    If you haven't gotten access to netherrack yet, you can use a fireplace(s), which don't burn down any wood around it and provide smoke as a beacon. You can craft a campfire out of 3 logs, 3 sticks, and 1 piece of coal.

    If it burnt your house down, that means it was too close to burnable materials, such as wood. Try separating it from your house with iron bars or glass.
