  • Question
Can I do a Fool's Mate in four moves, or must it be in two moves?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
The Fool's Mate consists of two moves (for black). However, you can insert other moves into the sequence, as long as you don't block your own progress.
  • Question
What should I do if the opponent does not move as I want him/her to?
    Community Answer
This is when you begin to understand the meaning of playing chess. That is the mindset of a potentially great player. In time, you will learn how to make decisions based on any opponent's move.
  • Question
How can I win with only with my king left and the opponent has 2 queens?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
That position will lead to a very quick loss. You would probably resign (give up) long before you get to that position.
  • Question
    How much time between turns?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
In regular chess there is no time limit on turns. In timed chess ("speed chess") the players (or the tournament) set a time limit ranging from a few seconds to a few hours per move. Tournaments often set a time limit on the total time a player may consume in making all his/her moves in a game.
  • Question
When and how could I castle?
    Avery Baumel
    Community Answer
Castling must be done before the king and the rook have moved. Take all the pieces in between your king and one of your rooks to other positions. Then move your king two spaces towards the rook (no matter which side), and then move the rook so it is one space closer to the center of the board than the king is. Look up pictures, it will help.
  • Question
What if I'm playing against a very wise experienced opponent and he ambushed me somehow. How will I beat him?
    Community Answer
Try to predict his moves and think like him.
  • Question
How do I set up a game of chess?
    Community Answer
Place both rooks on the corner squares. Place your knights next to the rooks. Bishops go next to the knights, place the queen in the square of her own color, and finally place the king on the last remaining square. The pawns go in across the second row from the back in front of the other pieces.
  • Question
What do I need to do to remember to hit my timer after each turn?
    Community Answer
Make a rhyme, like "Every time I make a move, hitting the timer is my groove".
  • Question
Where are the rook and the king positioned after a castle?
    Community Answer
If you are playing the white side, the king will be at C1 and the rook will be positioned at D1.
  • Question
    Can kings occupy adjacent squares?
    Luna
    Community Answer
