Unless it's made of wood or covered with weak cement, it will probably be okay.

  • Question
What if I can't find a flat wall to practice on?

How do I practice if I don't have a wall to hit?

You could set to yourself, or if you want control, set up a target and hit to it.
  • Question
How many times should I practice volleyball in a week?
    Community Answer
There is really no set amount of time to practice. It really just depends on you. If you are trying to master the skills, I'd say you should practice at least two to three times a week.
  • Question
Do these practices work even if I have never played actual volleyball? Would they help if I am trying out next year?
    Community Answer
Yes, but it would take additional time to learn how to bump and set if you never played. Doing these practices before tryouts will be helpful, but practicing in an actual game would help even more.
  • Question
What if I don't have a big open wall to play off of?
    Community Answer
You can try pulling a tarp between two trees and staked it to the ground. This will allow the ball to roll back down the slope to the player.

  • Question
I am not that experienced. How can I become team material in 5 months?
    Community Answer
Practice every day. Buy or borrow a volleyball and go to a wall and spike on the wall. You can bump the ball to yourself and set to yourself. Practice digging and rolling at home. Practice jumping and your volleyball stance. Find tutorials online to learn how to do all of these techniques. A huge part of volleyball is not giving up. If you avoid walking and just give it your all during tryouts you will most likely make the team. Learn how to run fast so you can speed to the ball. Talk to people who know how to play volleyball and practice with them.
  • Question
How could I include a point system?
    Community Answer
What I do is mark out a court, and if the ball goes "out," you will get a point. Another thing that I like to do is play with a slanted roof, using the same technique.

  • Question

My volleyball team contains fifteen people. The number of people on a team depends on their age, how many people want to try out for that team, and the coaches opinion.
  • Question
I want to try out for volleyball but don’t have a volleyball, could I use a soccer ball?
    Community Answer
It is best not to use a soccer ball. If you can, buy a volleyball. If not, there are ways you can practice without a ball. Practice techniques, your volleyball stance, how to jump, your approach before spiking, and how to dive and roll.
  • Question
I want to try out for the setting or outside hitter, how can I jump high to get to the ball and spike?
    Community Answer
Bring your arms all the way back before you jump. During the process of jumping, swing your arms back up. You can also find tutorials and exercises online that will help you jump higher.
  • Question
What is a jump-float serve? And how do I do one?
    Community Answer
A jump-float serve is where you stand at the back of the court, tossing up the ball forward-ish, and jump while hitting the ball. The ‘float’ part comes from the unpredictability of the serve, as this serve is less controlled than a regular serve. Jump floats are unpredictable because you hit the ball a bit softer than you normally would. A jump float should go to the other side of the court, and with enough practice, you could get good enough for the serve to float in the air or veer an unexpected direction.
  • Question
What position should I be in if I want to spike the ball?
    Neighborhood friend
    Community Answer
If you want to spike the ball, you are going to want to be in 3rd position or hitter (also known as front middle.) Call for the ball to get the person playing in 2nd position to set the ball to you.
  • Question
What are some good skills that I can use in general at tryouts?
    Neighborhood friend
    Community Answer
Normally in volleyball tryouts, they'll be testing your skills, so you're going to most likely want to work on these skills. Spiking/tipping is very important, work on timing and getting a high jump. You'll also want to work on passing and setting, this is important when you play as a team. Also work on hustling, it's good if the ball doesn't go exactly where it was planned to. Lastly, get to together with your friends if you can to practice, an important part of volleyball is communication, try to call for the ball when you are playing.
  • Question
Even if I will probably never find a team, is it wrong that I still want to practice a lot?
    Neighborhood friend
    Community Answer
No, not at all! It means you're developing a hobby that you enjoy. On the bright side to that, if you practice a lot, you'll have a higher chance of getting on to a volleyball team in the future.
  • Question
I am not supposed to hit a volleyball on concrete or bricks it tears up the ball, so what should I do to practice my serve?
    Community Answer
Do it on a smooth brick wall, like the type in a classroom. You can find such walls at most parks.
  • Question
How can I help a friend out in volleyball and make it fun?
    Community Answer
Volleyball should already be fun if they really want to do it. If you want to help make it more fun, then play real games and maybe bring in some more skilled players and have full-on games.
  • Question
I have a wall, but my parents don't allow me to use it. What else could I use as a wall?
    Community Answer
If you have a fence in your backyard, you could try using that. Since most fences aren't 7 foot, you would have to get lower to the ground which is also great practice for form.
  • Question
I'm on the practice team, which is a group of girls who "have potential and need to be worked on". Does that mean I'm not good enough?
    Community Answer
Yes and no. As you are on the practice team, you do have potential but you also need to put in the work. You have a good opportunity to make yourself better than the girls on the performance team and you should take it. If you really care about the sport, you just need to put in practice and you will definitely be good enough.
  • Question
I want to become an attacker and a lifter. What should I do?
    Community Answer
There are many good drills to practice to be an attacker. You can practice your three-step hitting approach towards a wall. Watch Volleyball games to understand the fine points and techniques of the game. Practice blocking and shuffling to another location and blocking again with a wall or a doorway. Practice peeling off the net as fast as possible. Visualizing (imagining yourself doing the most perfect hit). Spiking against a wall and practicing the wrist flick motion.
