Have you seen the artsy or cartoonish-looking portraits that are popular on Instagram and want to join in on that trend? This wikiHow article teaches you how to join in on the AI trend and covers what apps to use.

Things You Should Know

  • Lensa AI is the most popular AI art generator for Instagram, turning your selfies into differently styled avatars.
  • Use Lensa AI for a fee, or try Meitu Anime AI Art Generator for free.
  • If you're on TikTok, try AI Face, AI Portrait, or AI Manga filters for free, or use MyHeritage's AI Time Machine to get realistic photos of you as a medieval princess.

  1. Tap the app icon that looks like a white circle on a black background.
    • If you don't have the app, you can download it for free from the Google Play Store or App Store .
    • The developer is Prisma Labs, the same people that made Prisma: Photo Editor .
    • If this is your first time opening the app, you'll need to agree to the Terms and Conditions to continue, then you tap Continue through the tutorial.

  3. As soon as you close the subscription window, the "Magic Avatars" page will appear. Tap Try Now to continue.
  4. Pick if you want to create "Humans" or "Dogs & cats."
    • Tap Continue to proceed after you read the warning.
  5. You'll see a tile with an example of each style, so tap the ones that you want to generate.
    • You can choose up to 10 styles.
    • Tap Continue with X styles to proceed. The number of styles you have selected will appear here.
  6. You'll see this at the bottom of the "Upload your photos" page with examples of photos that you want to upload and those you want to avoid.
    • If you haven't used Lensa before, the app needs permission to access and use your photos and media storage.
    • Tap the photos to upload. Scroll through your gallery to find the photos you want to use. Remember to adhere to the example photos! You want to upload photos that show the subject in different lighting and different angles so the AI has a lot of data to work with.
    • Upload 10-20 of them for the best results. You'll see a count of the photos you have selected at the top of your screen.
  7. It's at the bottom of your screen and will become visible after you've selected at least 10 pictures.
  8. Tap to select how many avatars you want (you'll see a breakdown of the styles you chose and how many variations you'll see) and the price.
    • Tap Purchase for X . You'll see the price you're paying listed here, as well as the non-subscriber pricing.
    • The app will connect to either the App Store or Google Play Store for payment, so you can finalize checking out.
    • All your photos will upload and the app will work on generating some AI art for you, which can take anywhere between 20-40 minutes. But, you don't need to keep the app open for that time!
  9. Since Lensa AI will take a while to make your AI art, you can close the app and get a notification when it's done.
    • Tap the notification when it pops up. When you see the "Hurray!" notification, click it to open Lensa AI.
    • Alternatively, you can tap the Lensa AI app icon to open it without the notification.
  10. It's at the bottom of your screen and will open a new window with all your magic avatar packages.
    • Click the package you just made to see your avatars. If this is your first time using Lensa AI, this will be called "Pack #1," but the number you select will change as you buy more packs.
    • Your images are separated by category, so you can see the different styles that you chose.
  11. Tap Save all avatars or tap a single photo and save it. Once you've saved all of them or one you want on your phone, you can continue!
    • To share the image on Instagram, Create a post or Story and upload the Lensa AI picture.
    • Once you've shared the AI picture, make sure you use the appropriate hashtags , like #aigenerated , #lensaapp , and #aiportraits to join in the AI trend. If you use the tag #lensaapp , there's a chance you'll be featured on the Lensa official IG!

Alternative AI Apps

  1. This app is available for iPad, iPhone , and Android and is free to use. The AI can often mess up, however, and generate art that imitates the color palette of the chosen photo but messes up everything else. Like turning a picture of a cat in a bandana into a muscular Viking wearing a bandana. The results are generally pretty funny.
  2. Find this filter by searching for "AI Anime filter" and it'll be the most popular one. You'll get results that are very different from Lensa AI!
  3. You can get the MyHeritage app for desktop as well as mobile, but the desktop version seems to be more reliable (some people claim that the mobile app is buggy and glitchy). Although this isn't free, you get pretty awesome pictures of yourself in different times, like an old Colonial or Flapper from the 1920s.
  4. You have to sign up for Nightcafe's community to earn credits, which you use to generate AI art. But because of the aesthetics and wide range of available images (try searching for something completely random like "a dwarf on a mushroom in winter" and you'll get results), it's highly popular and trendy.
