  4. In the question box, type your question normally.

Navigate to the Peter Answers site.

  1. Go to the Peter Answers website , where you’ll see two text boxes on the page: “Petition” and “Question.” The “petition” box is where you are asking Peter for his help (or at least that’s what your friends will think). The “question” box is where you’ll enter the question you’re asking Peter…that he’ll ~mysteriously~ know the answer to. [1]

Ask one of your friends for a question.

  1. If you’re with a group of friends that you’re trying to trick, have them come up with the question you’ll ask Peter—that way, they won’t think that you rigged the game ahead of time! If you already know the answer to the question that the group came up with, you can move on to the next step.
    • If you don’t know the answer to the question, ask your friends for the answer. Tell them that they need to say the answer out loud so that Peter can hear it with his psychic powers.

Type a period and the answer in the petition box.

  1. Pressing the period key will clue the site into the fact that you’re typing the secret answer. After you press the period (“.”), every letter you type after will appear as the phrase, “Peter, please answer the following question.” So, for example, if you’re typing “My favorite color is blue,” “Peter please answer” will be what appears in the petition box—as long as you typed the period first. [2]
    • If you still don’t know the answer to the question and your friends won’t tell you, you might get stuck and tricked into revealing the secret. In this case, just type “Peter please answer the following question” or “I cannot answer this question” into the petition box.
    • Peter will give a generic statement like "You shall not doubt of me at all, keep trusting me and soon I'll answer." In other words, the trick won’t work, and you can try again with a new question (that you know the answer to!).

Press the “.” button until the phrase is complete.

  1. If your actual answer is shorter than the petition phrase (“Peter, please answer the following question”), then your friends will easily guess the trick. So, you need to keep typing or pressing the period key until you come to a logical break in the phrase. The extra periods will not appear in your secret answer. [3]
    • For example, you could stop at “Peter, please answer,” “Peter, please,” or “Peter, please answer the following.” But if you stop at “Peter, please foll,” that’ll look pretty fishy!
    • Peter will accept and display answers that are longer than the petition phrase, but it will be pretty obvious something is up if you continue to type after the screen displays the entire petition phrase. Nothing more will show up once you've reached the end of the phrase.
    • You can also tell your viewers to stare at the screen so that they can correct any spelling errors that you might make…and so they’re less likely to figure out that you’re not typing what’s appearing on the screen.

  1. Once you’ve finished typing your answer, press the colon (:) button. Depending on your keyboard, you might have to press “Shift” + “:” — just do whatever you’d have to do to type a colon normally. This colon will tell the site that you’re done typing and move your answer to the question box. [4]
    • Alternatively, click on the question box instead of typing the colon.

Type in your question, then press ?

  1. In the question box, type in the question that you and your group wanted to ask Peter. And there’s no tricks here! Type your question in a totally normal way. Then, type a question mark on your keyboard to submit the question. [5]
    • Alternatively, click “Send Question” instead of typing a question mark.
    • Sometimes, the website will ask you to agree to a liability release before you can move on to the next step. Peter Answers is a totally safe site that’s been around for a long time, so while you should read the release, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about here.

Wait for Peter’s answer.

  1. Once you’ve submitted your question, you’ll just need to wait a few seconds for Peter to give “his” answer—he should display the response that you secretly typed in the petition box. If your friends don’t know that you typed in the answer, they’ll be flabbergasted. You can probably keep them amazed for quite a while, as long as they don’t start paying close attention to what your fingers are typing!

      Tips

      • Peter is only as accurate as you are, so if you enter a typo, Peter will answer with a typo, and people will get suspicious pretty quickly. If you think you made a mistake, you can backspace and start again at any point (although it might raise suspicions). Just remember to enter a period again to signal to Peter that you're entering the answer.
      • When you're typing in the petition box, it helps to NOT look at the screen, because it can throw you off and make you forget what you're typing. Instead, look down as you type the answer. Only look up after you've typed the period to check how much of the query is finished.
