How to End Love Letters

  1. Maybe you two have an inside joke or something you always tell each other when parting ways. For example, “See you later, alligator,” “Love you most,” or “Catch ya later, babe.” [1]
  2. Use words of affirmation to leave your partner with the knowledge of how much they mean to you. Be creative and write something that accurately sums up your feelings for your significant other. [2]
    • Dating coach Crista Beck advises to “tell [your partner] what they mean to you and how their love has changed your life for the better…like ‘wow, your love has altered my existence.’”
    • Try “I am so happy you are in my life” or “I love you more every day.”

  3. End with a statement like “I promise to always support you” or “I will cherish you for as long as I live.” Relationships thrive on trust, so it’s nice to end your love letter by reminding your partner of your commitment to the relationship. [3]
    • If you’re going out of town, write your partner a personal love letter for every night you’re gone so they’re reminded of your ongoing trust in each other.
  4. Write your own poem or write a song —it can be as simple as Roses are red, violets are blue… , as long as it comes from the heart! Alternatively, use a famous quote or lyric that resonates with your relationship or is from a song, book, or film that you and your significant other love. [4]
    • "I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.” – poet Pablo Neruda, “Love Sonnet XVII”
    • "Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.” – Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights
    • "You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I've ever had, and no matter what happens to us in the future, every day we are together is the greatest day of my life." – The Notebook
    • "Love is the answer, and you know that for sure/Love is a flower, you've got to let it grow." – John Lennon, “Mind Games”
  5. Put on lipstick and kiss the paper where you wrote your name. Draw a small heart beside your name, or draw a romantic flower like a rose or tulip (bonus points if you have a flower-related name!) [5]
    • If you have a signature scent, spritz the letter with your perfume so your partner can feel even closer to you.
    • Give your partner a hug and kiss (or as close as you can get on paper) by writing as many X’s and O’s as your loved-up heart desires.
    • You can also use a lipstick kiss or perfume to seal the envelope after you put the letter in.
  6. If your partner is big on words of affirmation, end your letter by describing your feelings with a statement like “I am so lucky to have someone like you in my life.”
    • For physical touch, write “I can’t wait until the next time I hold you in my arms.”
    • For quality time, commit to plans like “I could spend forever with you…should we start with dinner tomorrow night?”
    • For acts of service, end your letter with “I can’t wait to see you on your birthday, bake you a big cake, and shower you with all the love you deserve.”
    • For receiving gifts, include a small token at the end of your letter, like a taped-on piece of chocolate, pressed flowers , stickers, or a sentimental picture.
    • Matchmaker Crista Beck stresses the importance of understanding your partner’s love language : “if you each…discover your love language, then you can…love your partner with their love language so that they feel love.”
  7. Professional matchmaker Julia McCurley recommends ending your love letter with common phrases like “‘You are always in my heart,’ ‘I love you now and forever,’ ‘I am yours forever.’” Choose a phrase from the list below. Add a comma after the closing, then write your name on the next line.
    • All my love
    • Forever yours
    • Forever and ever
    • You complete me
    • You light up my life
    • Until the end of time
    • You are my soulmate

    • Thinking of you always
    • My heart belongs to you
    • Thank you for being mine
    • You are the love of my life

    • With all the love in the world
    • I’ll be dreaming of you tonight
    • Love you to the moon and back
    • You make my world a better place
    • Love you more than words can say
    • Can’t wait to make more memories with you

      Tips

      • Be candid and specific: your letter should sound like you, since it’s you that your romantic partner is interested in! Write in your own voice and use specifics from your relationship to make your letter feel personal.
      • If you’re experiencing romance writer’s block, make a list! Write a list of things you love about your partner, things you hope to do with them someday, or things you already do together that you love.
      • Personalize your letter to your significant other’s personality. Are they a class clown? Go for humor in your letter. Are they a hopeless romantic? Lay on the sappiness. Do they like to keep things spicy? Lean into the more sensual side of your love letter.
