More About Creating Kingdom Names

Define your kingdom and its purpose. In other words, what is your kingdom all about? How would someone from a neighboring kingdom describe it? Is it known for being a trading hub overseen by merchants? Is it a military-focused kingdom? Is it a chaotic nation of pirates that makes its name by pillaging and stealing from others? Or is it a kingdom built on and driven by magic?

The options are endless! Figure out your kingdom’s purpose and claim to fame. Then, see if you can think of (or generate) a name that fits the nature of your kingdom.

Think about what you want the kingdom’s name to sound like.
This is a more subjective concept, but it’s something to consider. Do you want your kingdom to have a strong and valiant-sounding name? A name that sounds mysterious and full of intrigue? If you’re torn on what direction to go in terms of finding a kingdom name, sometimes just nailing down the “vibes” you want can help you figure things out. For example, if you’re torn between a list of possible names, you can say them out loud to yourself and see which one fits the desired vibe best—whether you’re going for a name that’s grandiose and fancy or magical and ethereal.

Consider the kingdom’s geography, history, and culture. What would your kingdom look like on a map? Are there rolling hills and fields or dense and magical forests? Is it a desert kingdom or a kingdom that developed along the coastline of a great ocean? Maybe it’s an isolated mountain kingdom—or a kingdom that’s deep underground. Regardless, the geography of a kingdom can easily inspire its name. For example, you might use something like “Azure Shores” for an island or coastal kingdom, “Mystwood” for a forest, or “Skyspire” for a mountain kingdom situated at high altitudes.

The same is true of a kingdom’s history or culture. For example, your kingdom could be named after the legendary figure who founded it or the first person ever to rule it. Maybe a significant event in the kingdom’s history changed or shaped its name. Culturally, the kingdom’s traditions, religious beliefs, mythology, and language might also play a part in its name.

Depending on the amount of lore you’re coming up with for this kingdom, you could flesh out your kingdom’s history and culture—and then use those details as inspiration for its name.

Look for words in other languages that fit your kingdom.
If you’ve come up with certain English words that aptly fit or describe your kingdom, try translating them to other languages. You might find that the translations (or other similar-sounding words) work even better for your kingdom’s name! You can also try mixing and matching words from different languages to create your kingdom name.

Examine world history and mythology for inspiration. Plenty of iconic kingdom names come from world history and mythology (rather than fictional media and pop culture). If you’re going by mythology, there’s Atlantis, the fabled underwater kingdom; Avalon, the kingdom from Arthurian legends; Valhalla, the Viking afterlife; or Tír na nÓg, the Celtic Otherworld. In real life, there are ancient civilizations, such as Babylonia and Assyria, as well as ancient city-states like Athens and Sparta.

Delve into the meaning and history of those names, and you might get a stroke of inspiration for your own kingdom name.

Consider the length of the name and its pronunciation. Generally, remember not to make the name too much of a mouthful. You don’t want a super-long, hard-to-pronounce name, especially if you’ll be sharing the kingdom and its name with other people (via a story, game, or some other medium).

Overall, a great kingdom name should be distinct (meaning it stands out and doesn’t sound just like other names) and easy to remember. Typically, a name with two to three syllables is ideal, although, of course, you can stretch that if you come up with something you really love. After all, it really comes down to you, your imagination, and what sounds “right” to you!
