Place a paper towel over the microwave safe bowl - while it allows the butter to "breath", if it does explode (or even bubble) the paper towel will catch any near-spills.

The butter may "explode" and cover the ceiling and/or walls of your microwave with liquid butter. It is a pain to clean off. Keep an eye on it if it begins to bubble a lot. Or just cover the dish with a paper towel and no worries!
