Choose names that fit the time and location of your pirate. If you want your pirate name to sound realistic, this one is important! Different names were popular depending on where your pirate was born—regardless of where their adventures took them throughout their life. For example, if you named your pirate “François,” but he’s from a place that doesn’t have any French influence, that might be a little strange. Or if you choose a name like “Stephanie,” which didn’t become popular until the 1900s, that also wouldn’t be the best pick. Incorporate a nickname (if that’s your pirate’s style!). As you’ve probably already noticed, there are three primary pirate name types. The first is just a standard name (like Henry James). For this option, you can always choose names that fit the tone and nautical theme you want, even if they're not actually nicknames. So, for example, you could decide that your pirate's real name is "Jack Treasuretrove." The next is a famous title or nickname that doesn’t come from the pirate’s actual birth name (for example, Blackbeard). And finally, there’s also the combination of both the original name and a famous nickname (like how Jack Rackham became Calico Jack). For a lot of people, the last two types are more fun!
